Neat. I remember playing 25th Anniversary game on my IBM PS/2 model 30
286 10 Mhz PC back then. I only enjoyed its intro and real-time space
battle. Adventure parts weren't my thing. I still don't like those. :P
Anyways, this remix one was annoying too. :P

Heh, somebody took the classic ASCII Star Trek game and put it on top
of a Star Trek 25th Anniversary shell. Oh boy, are some lawyers gonna
have a field day! ;-)

I never was all that enthralled with either game, but then I was never
the biggest fan of classic Star Trek. I played the strategy game more,
just because it came first and I had less to compare it against. On
the other hand, I enjoyed the 25th Anniversary adventure game more,
simply because it had much better visuals (naturally, since it came
out 15 years after the other one) and better captured the feel of the
original series. "Super Star Trek", even for its time, was extremely
limited in its scope. Honestly, after blasting two or three Klingon
ships, the game quickly lost its luster.

This version? Well, it's visually more appealing but the gameplay
isn't as enthralling; it's been streamlined in some ways and useful
information (like damage status0 isn't as readily available. Still, I
suppose if you've never played Super Star Trek (or any of its 10,000
clones) this is possibly the best way to do it for a modern gamer. The
cryptic ASCII displays probably won't appeal to many nowadays.

I actually had a wide format green-bar printout of the FORTRAN version of
Super Star Trek sitting under my bed like it was porn for years.

What a childhood.

As a publishing company, yes. As a holder of IP rights, Interplay is
still surviving off a drip-feed of money coming from royalties and
copyrights. It's mostly a paper corporation but - unless I missed some
news on the topic - it still exists as a company.

Although I'm not sure if Interplay still possesses copyright to "25th
Anniversary", or if that's one that they sold off. Either way,
/somebody/ has rights to it, and Paramount probably might get a bit
miffed to see their product used this way too. So it might not be
Interplay, but somebody else.

All I'm saying is that somewhere lawyers are grinning at the potential
lawsuits. ;-)

For the voice acting at least. Those are actually Shatner and Nimoy, I
think.

That takes me back to playing a version of it on the Speccky 48k and I
think it was game that made me realise that our new purchase (yes Dad of
course it's for educational purposes and not playing games) was in fact
a 16k model regardless of what the box said. So back to the shop to get
the right one.

As a little coincidence, last week I came across Classic Trek 80 on the
iPad which is a remake of the game on the TRS-80. It's seems strange now
how quickly games went from something this basic to ones that were far
more sophisticated in using the capabilities of the machine.

An awful example I read about was when McDonald's changed the look of
their restaurants (if you can call them that) to be more green coloured
they went after a bookshop in Scotland that was called McDonald's (it
was the owner's name after all) that had a green and gold shopfront. The
fact that the bookshop had existed before MacDonald's was even a thing
in the UK and it was hardly as if someone was going to think there was
any connection between the two companies didn't seem to matter. I
believe the end result is the bookshop owner backed down as they
couldn't afford the legal costs even if they had won.

They are. The CD-ROM version of the "Star Trek 25th anniversary" game
used the original cast to voice all the lines. It was quite the coup
at the time. It greatly enhanced the feel that, instead of playing a
game, you were actually watching some unseen episode of the original
series (even if the delivery was often a bit lackluster at times).

Although I think the developer of this... mod? game?... spliced in a
few extra lines from the TV series too.
