Some manufacturing methods are subtractive.

For example, a disk drive housing starts with a solid
slab, and an NC machine mills out spaces for the platters,
motor, voice coil assembly and so on. That takes time.
There are a number of steps in disk drive manufacture,
where no pictures are available of those items
being made. (The only pictures we're allowed to see,
are disk drives being put in the test chamber with
the big door on the front.)

The shavings from milling are saved, sent back to the material
supplier, who can make new slabs out of them.

3D printing is additive. It would be good for
things that are "mostly air", like making a
skin for something.

But as for the economics of 3D printing, or
the strength of the final materials, I doubt
it is a winner from that perspective. It's
valued for flexibility in making things.

At work, one of the engineers showed us a 3D printed
plastic gear assembly (planetary?) that was pretty
complicated. Even though we were careful, the sample
was broken by the time it was handed back to the guy :-)
My personal opinion is "stay far away", unless you
know for a fact, it can do what you want. It might
be good for making figurines for bowling trophies,
but just don't handle it too much. You could make
a prototype of something, to show that the 3D details
were correct, but then switch to another method (like
making molds for some nylon66 gears instead).

There seems to be a lot of interest in selling these
to hobbyists. And you can do things like print parts
for building your own robots. But if you were thinking
of printing yourself a car jack, it's not likely to
lift a car.

No secret to hard disks, after all so many companies make them.

Well if they made a rocket, it must be strong.

You snapped a part? Or it fell to pieces?

And yet guns have been printed which outperform the real thing.

Very handy for "I need a cog to replace this in my drill and they don't make them any more".

Why anyone makes plastic cogs I don't know. I've seen them in power drills and large RC cars. Insanity. You need metal there for strength.

I have never been a victim of such a thing, I'm not stupid enough to fall for their tricks.

Just as easy to move it 3 feet to my left onto the table they for some reason never go to in the corner.

Are you superhuman? Most people forget something 1 in 10 times. 1 in 10 is enough for him to notice.

I buy £3 keyboards. I doubt I can get keys that cheap. It would be nice to just buy the ones in the bottom right corner he goes for, but even then I think the cost of a handful of keys would equal the whole keyboard.

My supplier also offered single keys. (and butterfly mechanisms)
IIRC the postage was more than the key.

I guess if I could find a supplier of keys who would sell me 50 keys all of the same 5 types (the bottom right ones he eats) and post them all together, it could be economical. But those suppliers are no doubt simply taking apart whole or damaged keyboards and won't have loads of one key. Also I'd have to get those 5 keys for less then £3. Also that would only work if I had a decent keyboard people consider worth selling replacement keys for.

Just a thought! have you thought to try an Apple majic keyboard - the
keys are very 'flat' and, maybe, not quite as tempting as the old
fashioned type which you are probably using. Here's one I found for
you:-

Wow, less than most overpriced Apple stuff. Anyway, I'm not sure about the different keys. On the bottom row, starting on the left, I have CTRL, WINDOWS, ALT, SPACE. Although I can remap them how I wish, I'd have the wrong labels on them.

Aha! Searching "flat keyboard", I found this: https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/266051385762. A similar Windows version. I'll give it a try.

Not easy to check my Logitech K800s because you can't put
the keytops back on if they do come off. I got one free warranty
claim when one did come off when a fingernal hooked it off.

But you would have been free to return it if you got it home
and decided the lettering wasnt visible enough if you have
enough of a clue to buy the keyboard from a viable seller.

The Logitech K800 is fine even with the leds off and it
turns them off in seconds since its a cordless keyboard.

But this sub thread has diverged into how to avoid the lettering wearing
off.

Buy when you have enough of a clue to check reviews
and buy from a seller who does returns if you don't like
it when you have recieved it, that isnt a problem.

Tried one before. Horrid to type on and they love chewing it too. I'm going to try the flat keyed keyboard David suggested, which hopefully they can't pick the keys off.

My current keyboard, NIZ/Plum 108EC-S 35gf, has a chance of
withstanding your parrot: its key caps have indelible lazer
engraving and their lower edges are below the top plate, so
the bird will have no leverage. My model is not listed on
their website, but the available ones are very similar:

I disagree. You could presumably pick off a key using a screwdriver. If so, the parrot can do the same. The pointy end of the beak can get into any tiny gap.

The dealer is reliable and takes returns.
The comments and reviews did not say anything about this.

I needed a keyboard, no matter what. It took me a long time to decide
that I needed something else.

In fact, I still use that keyboard when needed for some extra machine.
