It *sounds* like a good idea ... until you realise that:

a. If you phone needs repairing, the likelihood of you being
able to turn on "Maintenance Mode" is probably fairly low.

b. A bug in the software or a workaround hack will make the
option simply pointless psuedo-security option anyway.

c. Some repair services (including Apple) can send you back
a replacement phone, not your original device, depedning
on the problem.
