I Turned MIT Award Winning Toroidal Propeller Into A PC Fan
| Fan Showdown S5 Special - YouTube

<https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4ImeOKgD_Dw>

"MIT has just been awarded an R&D 100 award for the work they did on
toroidal propellers. MIT set out to create a drone propeller with
similar performance to standard propellers but while being much quieter.
Well spoiler alert they nailed it, demonstrating a Toroidal propeller
on a consumer drone that seemed to check all the boxes."

Interesting. Are there any plans to build these for normal customer
computers?

According to that video, he used a 3D printer to test the design. Dunno
if any factories would attempt the same.

However, the torodial design was for free/open designs. The tips of the
blades. For a drone, for example, the blades are not surrounded by a
cage. With a PC fan, and to mount in standard positions, a cage is
required even if the blades are not inside the cage, but that would make
for a fat/thick fan that would not fit in most mounting designs inside a
PC case. The purpose of the fans is different, too. The toroidal
design was for thrust verus PC fans designed for air flow for cooling.
You can add more fans to a case that are slower spinning for equivalent
cooling (and dB is not additive with multiple fans) but slowing fans for
thrust means you don't have enough even with more fans to elevate a
drone or propel a boat.
