This makes me nostalgically sad even though I haven't bought a print
edition in a long while. I had Byte, Maximum PC, PC Gamer and 2600
subscriptions at one point and would randomly purchase Computer Shopper
(all 20 pounds of it) as needed before the advent of the intertubes.

I'll miss them but it's ultimately a good thing, though. What a long,
strange trip it's been :)

I miss them as well but I wouldn't subscribe to them now.

My first magazine subscription was for Compute's Gazette. It was a
magazine dedicated to the Commodore 64 and maybe other Commodore
computers, I don't remember now.

My last subscription, until I decided to let it lapse, was for PC
Gamer.

I have a few copies of Byte (stolen from some library, shhhh), and a very
early issue of a lesser-known mag, the name escapes me though, I'll try to
dig it out soon.

I thought they ended already! I remember reading them in libraries, stores, etc. before Internet blew up.

I gave up on my last print magazine subscription just about a year
ago. I still regret it to some degree. News read on dead trees felt
somehow more substantial than that on an ephemeral website. What you
read today would be there tomorrow, or in ten years; no worries about
a 404 or the page being edited after the fact to remove an embarassing
error.

The format also forced a certain necessary conciseness that articles
on websites sometimes lack*. You had to write an article that would
fit on one or two pages. The fixed layout of the page also helped
mitigate some of the worst excesses of the advertising; no flashing
adverts in the middle of the page distracting you from what you just
read; all the marketing was usually bumped to the side. It just felt
more... polite.

And thus, print had a feeling of authenticity and reliability that web
articles lacked. Surely, my subconscious thought, any company willing
to put the time and effort into printing this story onto paper and
mailing it to me MUST have put the same amount of effort into
researching the story in a fair and unbiased way. Intellectually, I
knew this wasn't true; print journalists could be just as biased and
inaccurate as most web-based stories... but still, they benefited from
that assumption.

Nonetheless, despite all these advantages, even I eventually gave up
on hard-copy media. Partly because of its inconvenience, because it
was always dated by the time I got it, or because of its price... but
mostly because I was just reading so much on the web already, that I
never got around to the print versions. Who has time for a magazine
when I have fifty websites to scan?

I'll miss the passing of computer magazines, but even I have to admit,
their time has come and gone.

* yes, I see the irony of my complaining about people not getting to
the point on the internet

I used to get free Entertainment Weekly magazines, but they stopped last
year or so. :(

Maximum PC is now going to digital only. Gone are my abilities to
bookmark and highlight and tear out pages that I am interested in.

I am going to cancel my subscription. There is nothing like holding a
book, magazine, or newspaper in my hands.

And the wear and tear on my eyes and neck reading something in a web
browser.

I used to get this one for free as well. I had airline mile reward
points to piss away or something like that and I used them for this
magazine for several years. I am not surprised that they are gone.

subscription:
https://www.magazines.com/entertainment-weekly-magazine.html. They said
those with old subscription would get People magazines. I never got
them! :(

I can't remember the last time I bought a print computer magazine,
probably twenty or so years. Now I can't imagine why I want to
considering the information that is only a click away and it's free.
Like you though I will miss them especially the anticipation of going
into the newsagent to see if the latest issue of Crash magazine was in
this month.

I do have a magazine subscription still active though, Private Eye which
is a mixture of current affairs and satire often intermixed. It's a
testimony to its appeal that its still popular yet hasn't gone to
digital at all although they do give you the odd story as a little
teaser now.

The worst for me as a kid was a two week trip through Western Canada.
Basically 7 days driving west from Toronto, and 7 days drving back.

>Where are you?

I live in Canada. I've only been to the US once as an adult, back in
1994 for a conference in Boston, but I didn't even need to show ID,
let alone have a passport.

Ugh. Back then, we didn't have Internet! I did have Frogger mini-arcade
