It's basically Civilization with space marines. It isn't anywhere
nearly as addictive or well made as Civilization, but the addition of
Space Marines to any genre helps gloss over a lot of problems.

It's also - unsurprising for a Games Workshop product - mostly an
opportunity to upsell you more crap. Now that you have the base game,
you get to buy the DLC for all the other factions. Want to play the
Tyranids? That'll be $15USD please. Chaos Space Marines? Open that
wallet again. T'au? Armored Vehicles? Forts? Cha-ching, cha-ching,
cha-ching!

You can get a full-game experience with the base-game, but
replayability is low. Which, now that the base game is free, is an
okay trade-off, but it was a lot more annoying when they expected you
to pay for that bit too.

TL;DR: Games Workshop (and their subsidiaries) are greedy fucks ;-)
