Police use phone to track iPad catching Bloomberg's housekeeper's kidnapper
<https://www.nytimes.com/2022/02/05/us/bloomberg-housekeeper-kidnapped-colorado.html>

"The two were found after investigators said they used an app
on the woman's phone (which was left behind at the ranch)
to track her iPad to the Wyoming motel."

Anyone know what app that might have been & how they did that?

Nospam is - once again - correct. You are totally clueless about
iAnything.

This tracking in iOS is a very basic feature. The app is included on
every iOS device on the planet. It allows one to track all of YOUR OWN
devices, and any that people WILLINGLY share with you. For example, your
kids phones, etc.

I suppose you will spin this as some horrible, dystopian “Apple tracks your
every movement” thing, but it is ONLY for your own stuff, in case you lose
an iPhone/iPad/iWhatever, you can see approximately where it is. It uses
your iCloud account, and everything that is logged in with that account.
So when you sell/give away your iPhone, you sign out of iCloud, do a full
reset and now you can longer track that device. And the new owner cannot
track you, unless you WILLINGLY permit them to do so.

Simple. Safe. And very handy in lots of situations. The story you quote
is a typical good use of this.

Read it and weep.

Besides, Apple find-my code is so crappy, it's not even hard to disable.
