I was having a spring clean of old PCs, and opened up a HP corporate
shitbox and noticed it has "enthusiast" Ripjaws RAM with fins. Tested it
and found it is running at 1600 CL10. Now Sandy Bridge was supposedly
1333 RAM speed. It isn't the LGA2011 extreme edition. Furthermore the HP
BIOS is locked down, you can't overclock it.
But it seems it reads the DIMMs and dutifully sets itself to them?

There is some mention of the behavior here.

https://bit-tech.net/reviews/tech/memory/the-best-memory-for-sandy-bridge/1/

Makes you wonder what purpose a rating serves, if you support
exceeding it like that.
