That was a very interesting read and quite applicable to my P/390-E.

I see reference to it in the documentation, drivers, and programs
associated with the P/390(-E).

In some ways the P/370 ~> P/390 ~> P/390-E are different generations in
the same family.

I shipped my two P/370 systems along with associated equipment and
documentation to Kevin. I am preparing to send him another shipment
from what I missed earlier before we move. He might be able to provide
you with additional information about the P/370.

Yes, from what I have gathered thus far from Tim Clarke and my own
research, the P/370 is functionally similar to the later P/390 with a
similar split of function between the CMOS core and emulated devices on
the PS/2 or RS/6k. The same software support package for OS/2 and AIX
can run it as far as I can tell but I haven't gotten that far yet.

My newer P/390-E software states that it supports the older P/390 and P/370.

I would not be surprised if the older software doesn't support the newer
hardware.

The basic difference between the three generations are the memory addressing models. P/370 is 24-bit virtual addressing model, P/390 and P/390E are 31-bit (that's correct, NOT 32-bit) virtual addressing model. There are also various OS-dependent. "memory expansion" capabilities. The P/390(E) may be IPL-ed in an S/370 "mode".

The OS/2 or AIX device drivers essentially form the I/O subsystem for the program storage and execution component provided by the P/370 or P/390(E).
