Thunderbird is probably the most complete one, followed by Evolution and

Doubling down on this. Thunderbird + Birdtray (which is used to keep
Thunderbird in tray and display notifications) are the best ones (albeit
memory-hungry, if that matters to you).

Yikes, I found both Thunderbird and Evolution excruciatingly
bloated and over-complicated, so I'd better stay well away from
"Kmail". Those do both attempt accurate HTML rendering though,
unlike clients I prefer such as Sylpheed and Alpine that roughly
(but often very servicably) render HTML as plain text. That
contributes a fair bit to their complexity, but hardly excuses how
unfriendly they can be to configure, or to fix when they break.

I agree 100%, aerc or neomutt etc for me are the best email
clients and they also do whatever you need.

The OP also wants a notification also :)

I also use mutt, for notifications you can try wmbiff or
gkrellm. But this depends on your X environment. I use
Window Managers as opposed to Desktop Environments, so
wmbiff/gkrellm works fine. I do not know how wmbiff will
work with KDE/GNOME and friends. Gkrellm works fine on
any D/E.

I never tried /direct/ access to gmail through sylpheed. I run my own
(internal) email server (an instance of sendmail), and use fetchmail
(http://fetchmail.berlios.de) to pull down mail routed to my gmail account.

They shouldn't be enterprise accts tho.. and it's erroring with
incorrect auth despite me putting it in correctly.
