The sheer volume of DLC is one of the things that keeps me from really
getting into Paradox games. Admittedly, the core game - while solidly
made - isn't something I truly enjoy... but I don't really make that
much effort trying to get into Paradox games either, because of a
worry that - if I do - I'll get sucked down the rabbit hole of endless
DLC.

In fairness, the base games are usually pretty solid experiences;
there's no real need to buy the DLC at all, especially if you are a
casual gamer. But I wouild get a lot of FOMO if I played "Crusader
Kings" and /didn't/ make an effort to acquire some or all of the DLC.
So, to save my wallet some pain, I tend to avoid their games
altogether these days.

I can't imagine I'm the only one who feels this way. All that DLC is
great for keeping their 'whales' happy, but I have to wonder if the
games would be more successful if the DLC list wasn't so extensive.
Especially to casual gamers who don't know much about Paradox titles;
so many other publishers keep the fun stuff behind a second DLC
paywall, and to most gamer's there's no evidence that Paradox is any
different. It's intimidating and puts one off just looking at it.

TL;DR: Paradox, knock it off with your dozens of DLC. Keep it down to
a more managable five or ten. ;-)

Well, it's nothing new and goes on sale for a lot less from time to time.

The base game, without any DLC is in fact free, both on GOG.com and Steam,
if you want give a try. If you actually want to pay money for the game,
then the Crusader Kings II: Royal Collection would be a better deal.
It has all the content DLC, the DLC it doesn't have is just cosmetic,
and when it goes on sale it's more affordable.

On the subject of free GOG.com games, they're giving away Hero of the
Kingdom II. It appears to be a fairly simple fantasy point-and-click
adventure game. Scroll down on the main page to see the link to get it:

Played and enjoyed both it and the original on Steam. Worth a whirl.
I picked it up to have a backup on GoG, but it's not a game that I feel
has any replayability.
