I've used a wireless (Bluetooth) headset with my Mac book Pro for quite a
while. Now suddenly, with Monterey 12.0.1, thev startup message from the
headset goes like this.

"BPwireless ready to pair"
"BPWireless connected sussessfully" as it connects to the Mac
"BPWireless connected sussessfully" as it connects to my iPhone
"Disconnected" very quickly as it disconnects from the Mac
It seems to stay connected to the iPhone but I'm not positive.

I suspect some sort of version or protocol mismatch, but don't know what to
check or what can be changed. Help?

Brand and model may be helpful.

Is it supposed to be pairing to both the Mac and the Phone?

Are the headphones capable of connecting to multiple devices? Only some
can, and usually there's some way to choose which is being used. If
not, then you'll obviously have to manually un-pair them from whichever
device you aren't currently using them with.

Yes, it has always paired with both. When the phone rang, it was easy to
switch focus so you could answer it.
