Well according to OFCOM 68% of homes with a landline only have a
cordless system which does not work in power cut. So for two thirds of
the population this is actually a "no change" to the status quo.

This was a problem during the extended power cuts we had , was it last
year?

So if your router becomes the DECT base station, and you put that on and
the ONT on a UPS, you actually have better resilience within the house
as typically DECT phones stay charged for a week, its only the base
station that needs mains...

I have a wall mounted phone in the hall which can be plugged into the
master socket if necessary.

I suspect many homes similarly still have a real telephone somewhere
that can be used if necessary.

Some DECT systems do work during a power cut. We had (still have) a
Panasonic system the base for which is a desktop phone which has 4xAA
rechargeable batteries inside that keep it running during power outage.

We had to ditch it when we discovered it would only block 50 nuisance
calls: the BT one we have now will block 1000!

Yes, I have! But in testing it recently it doesn't have tone dialling.

Do any phone companies still allow pulse dialling?

I have a couple of corded phones in a drawer, but, since BT's upgrade
to "Digital Voice", they would have to be plugged in to the router.
The master socket no longer provides POTS. So they would only work
if the router were in some way to remain powered.

I think the earlier point about how often you need to make a 999 call is
relevant. Of more relevance is where. The few times I have called 999 I’ve
been nowhere near my house and therefore my landline. Each time I’ve been
out and about and have used my mobile.
