There is comp.os.linux.security, but it is not active. Barely a dozen
posts a year.

Yeah, I saw that. Way back in the dark ages there used to be some pretty active
ones that I followed.

I was running snoop and supersniffer on my stuff at work. Saved my bacon when a
helpful sysadmin from the main office logged into one of my servers one night
and "fixed" it. Fixed it to the point where the kernel would panic, it'd
reboot, and panic and ... I fixed it during the day thanks to getting to see
part of what they'd changed. The next night they "fixed" it again, but I knew
what they'd done. I called and politely asked they not be so helpful in the future.

:-)

There is a security mail list at openSUSE, very little traffic.

https://lists.opensuse.org/archives/list/security@lists.opensuse.org/

Most of the traffic happens on the normal user mail list.

Probably the same reason that you posted this message 9 times.

OK, thanks.

Most of the stuff I've found is for "testing". I don't want to test, I want to
detect. Speaking of testing...where does the yast firewall configuration info
get written? From what I spotted it looks like it's based on iptables, just
like all that old stuff I used to love and diddle with using vi. After
converting the ipchains stuff I had set up.

I took a quick look at nast and kismet. kismet doesn't like the WiFi adapter
and nast is a bit...bare, plus I don't speak German. So that leaves me with
snort. I still have a small pile of scripts for it that I wrote in the past.

Depends if you are using the old system or the new one.

The old system was a house made firewall script, the configuration file
being "/etc/sysconfig/SuSEfirewall2". It has been deprecated but it
still works on Leap 15.x series.

The new system uses firewalld. See <https://en.opensuse.org/Firewalld>

Not familiar with any of them, sorry.
