Hi,

Some applications on my Raspberry Pi4 RISC OS 5.28 give "Buffer
overflow" and exit or won't load. ChatCube is one.

I'm sure I have to alot more memory. Is it the Next slot?
Or do I have to do something else?

My experience is that this error is generated by the font manager,
typically when too many font directories are selected. Or perhaps, as Ian
suggested, when a font directory contains a faulty font.

Kind regards,

Thanks to you and Ian. Methinks you are right. I tried to start examining
the fonts I have in !Fontastic and got the Buffer overflow error. All I
have to do now is locate the culprit.

A few years ago I was having trouble with EasyFont Pro, so I tried
changing to another Font manager and that also gave trouble... Making
dodgy fonts the obvious culprit.

I tried out a couple of idea to check the fonts, but in the end I did it
the hard way.

I created an Ovation Pro file.

I created a piece of illustrative text.

Example:

Font name size used EFP group
-----------------------------------
Acute 18point Group Scripts

Type in all the Capitals, all the lower case, all numerics, and the rest
of the keys. It needs to be 16 or 18 point to see if the fonts display
correctly. (17 pages worth).

I copied and pasted this multiple times.

Selected a block and applied the Font to it.

Selected the next block and applied the next font to it.

And so on...

In the first instance, scrolling up and down in OvPro would often show a
dodgy font... When it was reached in the re-display it often wouldn't and
the scroll was stopped.

Make a note of the font that should have displayed.

Now print the document, and again this would show dodgy fonts.

I forget now how many dodgy fonts I excised, but it was quite a number.

Having subsequently removed the dodgy fonts from EFP it became a more
stable beast.

It was a lot of work, but I'm glad I did it. :-)

While we are on the checking Fonts business.

I noticed recently while checking my own set of Fonts, a few of them have
IntMetric0 and Outlines0 files instead of the usual files sans the 0.

What's that all about?

Thanks

Hi,

Can anyone in your group help me with a software technical issue? I am trying to move a programme (Sibelius 7 on Risc PC) back to the installation disc which is normal when changing computers. However, every time I try to move the icon back to the floppy disc it tells me the programme is locked to protect the computer. Do you know how I can 'unlock' it?

Many thanks for any info you can give me.

Best wishes,

Barry Peter Ould

Have you checked the write protect tab on the floppy disc?

Just checking my memory. Is open protected & closed writeable. It's been
a long time.

Thanks for your quick reply to my query.

The floppy installation disc is not locked. It is the programme on the desktop that gives the locked message when trying to move the icon back to the floppy installation disc.

The Sibelius programme was designed to be moved back and forth to the floppy installation disc especially when updating the programme. The message seems to intimate that either the programme is locked on the hard drive or the hard dive is locked and I am not sure how to unlock it? I need to access some old Sibelius 7 files in order to update them and then import into Sibelius 5 on a PC.

It's very frustrating.

Any advice would be welcome.

Many thanks,

Barry Peter Ould

For anyone who ever wondered why this is the opposite behaviour of audio
and video cassettes, the 3.5" floppy inherited this behaviour from 5.25"
floppies which had a notch over which you placed a sticker to enable
write protection.

Au contraire?

Just found this in my old RISC OS 3 User Guide p41.

"You can remove the write protection by sliding the small tab at one
corner of the disc so that the hole is blocked off."

Two things.

There is a sneaky way of loading a copy of Sibelius on to the Risc
machine but leaving a copy on the installation disc. (I didn't say that.
You haven't heard it from me!) Are you sure that hasn't been done and
there is still a copy on your floppy?

Is the Sibelius 5 a RISC OS version or the Windows version of Sibelius?

I have a sneaking suspicion that you don't need the programme. Just take
the files to your Windows PC. The earlier versions of the Windows
Sibelius recognised the RISC OS versions in some way so you could import
them. Is that in your documentation anywhere?

The whole point is that I cannot move the programme back to the floppy installation disc so the programme is not on the floppy as the installation window is greyed out! I know all about floppy discs as I have been using them for years firstly on an old Macintosh then a Risc PC600 and Risc A4000 then on a Macintosh Performa. The floppy disc is not the problem!

I have Sibelius 7 version 3.05 on the Rich PC600 some of which I can import into PC Sibelius 4 or 5. The Sibelius 4 and 5 are for PC only and were the last version of the PC versions of Sibelius that allowed you to import files created on the Risc PC versions but they had to be updated to version 3..5 to work. I have the updater for making my version updated to version 3.5. but for this to work, you have to de-install the Sib7 Risc version from the Risc PC back to the floppy installation disc. This is where my problem is as I cannot move the programme back to the floppy as it states the programme is locked on the hard drive and cannot be moved to protect the computer! The solution must be quite simple but I just cannot think what it can be!

I have been using Sibelius from the beginning of its life i.e. Sib7 for Risc PCs through to PC versions 1 - Ultimate 2021. I do not do any work on the Risc PC version nowadays but have it because of all the old files of music of which some need to be imported into the PC versions 4 or 5 Sibelius. The problem is not the programme itself but the fact that I cannot de-install it in order to update it because it is locked!

Thanks.

Wait, no, it's only 5.25" floppies which had it backwards. 3.5" floppies
are open to write protect them.

This is just an idea (but don't blame me if it messes things up).

Press Menu over the program in the filer window and then go to App 'Sib7'
and follow arrow to right and then goto the 'Acess' entry and see what it
tells you.

Let us know, don't change anything at this point.

Would it be possible for you to send the files to someone who has an
updated copy of Sibelius 7 and who could load the v3.05 files and save
them out as v3.5 for you?

I have Sibelius 3.52 (Dec '97). "Save" just gives the one option so am I
to presume it will load v3.05 files then save them in the new format. If
so I can do that for you, Barry, which will get you over the problem till
you sort your locked version.

Many thanks Chris, that would be a great help. At the moment, it's just 5 files that need converting to 3.5 or 3.52.

How do I get them to you as they'll have to be copied to a floppy disc.

Can we correspond separately to this forum? I'm located in Huntly, Aberdeenshire.

You can email me at bipo@post.com? If you can let me have your phone number we can talk about this.

Many thanks and I look forward to hearing from you.

Best wishes,

Barry

If they are on your RiscPC, can you not put them in a zip file on that
machine & email them to me. I can then load them on my RiscPC. If they
are big, one zip file at a time.
