How to remove Firefox 89 and go back to 88?

Firefox 89 need lot RAM and it is very slow.
Why they do that?

What other web browsers use less resource so I can change?

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_web_browsers

Example:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Midori_%28web_browser%29

One thing you should realize though, is some of the
more obscure browsers, don't really pass compatibility
tests.

I used to find that with Safari at one time. After about
ten minutes, you'd give up, because of the failure rate
for full rendering. That's probably changed just a wee
bit since then.

I tried Konqueror a while back, and was pleasantly
surprised that it actually passed some tests just fine.

It really depends on how bored you are, as to how many
of these you might test.

True. Pale Moon is my default browser, but it has a compatibility
problem with a number of websites. So I still use Firefox
occasionally. I don't like the new version though.

Read the alt.comp.software.firefox group and you'll find a large amount of talk about v89 and v90 issues. You have to read down a long
list, and there are plenty of posts. Some have come up with good ideas and good links if you take the replies as proof. At least some
individual issues are fixed.

I don't see anything wrong with it's speed etc, just the bland appearance the thin tiny icons.
I've had to widdle down a rather long userChrome.css file dropping so much that used to work from v57 forward but stopped working in v89.
But I've found good results at least for me.

I use brave, haven't noticed any problems, but any browser might come
across some oddity.
Developers create and test software on a limited number of platforms.
Years ago this used to be IBM and then Compaq also. Since then things
have improved and there is more consistency.
I imagine web developers test on the MS browsers and maybe Google, so if
you are using a less popular browser you might see a problem here and
there.

My dear fellow, what gave you the silly idea that I didn't look in
that newsgroup (alt.comp.freeware, various other sources)?

BTW, I removed userChrome.css and more or less got back the old FFx
look.

I don't see any difference to 88.0. I can't remember exactly what the
two options were on installing 89.0, but I just clicked on "Not now" to
both. I'm still using the System theme.

Like you, Pale Moon is my default browser, and I keep FF as my reserve
browser for those awkward websites which don't display correctly. I
stopped using it as my default browser when the devs stopped allowing
tabs below the address bar. Yes, it can be corrected, but it shouldn't
be necessary and every update seems to require yet another correction.

Since I started using Firefox 89 it's frozen my computer twice and the
only way to get control back again was a cold restart with the on/off
button.

Are you sure it's FF which is causing the problem, and not some website
with poorly-written code which keeps accessing memory until it's all used?

I sometimes switch from 64 bit browsers, to 32 bit ones,
to rely on the coincidental limitations on process memory.

There can also be problems with "hardware acceleration", and
you can use "about:config" to find such setting. Adobe Flash
used to have a hardware acceleration setting as well,
and occasionally a user would need to use the in-pane setting
capability to stop that from happening (stop using GPU for
movie acceleration).

A user process, should never be able to drop a computer to
its knees, but... it happens. The more modern the OS, the
higher the odds such a corner condition exists. Especially
with things like containerization, the arch can support
"resource fights" between subsystems, leading to freezes.

I have had programs that just stopped responding and I couldn't shut
them down. Usually if I tried to stop a program three or four times, I
would get a message the program is not responding, and then asked if I
would like to stop it.

You can also open a terminal and type xkill.

I have never ran across anything that stopped me from opening a
terminal.

I didn't try to open a terminal, but I had no keyboard control anyway so
I couldn't have typed anything in. My mouse still worked and I could
bring up the menu. clicking on the stop button bought up the shutdown
menu but nothing there responded.

I'm pretty sure it's Firefox, the problem started a few days ago when I
installed the latest version. Both times the problem happened I was using
Youtube.

I use a serial port for debug.

On the boot line, the machine in the corner gets this added
in place of "quiet splash"

console=ttyS0,57600n8

It's harder to set up USB serial ports, because of not
knowing what the address will be. Since the serial port
is on the SuperIO, the address is stable at "S0".

If the screen takes a dirt-nap, the serial port
continues to work.

Just noticed slight differences in lack of borders for tabs and slightly
more height to toolbars, but no change to icons AFAICS. I've now
disabled all proton prefs and the appearance is exactly as with 88.0

Vivaldi, Brave, Pale Moon, Konqueror, Falkon, Epiphany, Dillo, Safari or
whatever.

I also use Pale Moon as my default along with its sister Interlink for
email/newsgroups. I do occasionally have to switch to a backup browser
when a site won't play ball.
