Why won't OS File #23 find a directory named "26 bit", with a space in its
name?

Probably because normal spaces are (&20) are not valid in many
filesystems, and they are converted to a hard space (&A0).

Try looking for "26 bit" where the space is a hard space &A0.

The filer uses 'hard spaces' (ASCII 160) rather than normal spaces
(ASCII 32). Perhaps that is the reason.
