Hi Guys,

I want to (re)size and cut a photo for a ID.
It must be 34 X 45 mm.

After opening a couple programs from which 2 crashed !? I did not see a
simple ruler tool anywhere to make a rectangle in these dimensions.

Is there something that simply works simple?

Edmund

Pinta seems to have a rectangle select. As you drag it shows the x,y co-ordinates where the cursor is, as well as the x,y size of the
rectangle.

I don't like user interface though. I use GIMP.

A word processor has rulers, and you can inject a picture
and resize it until it fits within ruler bounds.

Then, during printing, you cannot select "Scale to fit",
or the size will be completely wrong. You must select
a print option which preserves the dots per inch, pixels
per inch and so on.

You may need a custom template, to set the margins to small
values, to make better usage of your printer.

Some photo-print printers, accept media (USB stick or SD),
and have an onscreen interface for printing. I have a small
quantity of coated stock, and that's intended for photo printing.
Composing pictures the same way, using the computer, is a lot
less foolproof. And that's where the Word Processor with Rulers
comes in. It must support rescaling, so extremely high pixel
count pictures, are scaled down to take the defined amount
of space you want (34x45mm).

Twenty years ago, I'd use FrameMaker/FrameBuilder for this,
because... they worked. It was available for Sparc and
eventually Windows, and if I needed to compose something
at a fixed dimension, it was my go-to tool.

Thanks, I don't like it either, can't make it work the way I do XY
coordinates... I need mm and fit a part of a photo in it.

Apart from that, the size part of the coordinates behave weird and
inconsistent.
I try Gimp...

In GIMP you can use the cut tool the crop a chunk of an image. When using the tool you can set the aspect ration. 1:1 for a square or 16:9
for wide screen laptop or such (HD). It's just a ratio and not size but still you can crop a square and then scale the image to 500x500.
Not a simple one step process but it gets there.

I do that for wallpapers, crop the image to 16:9 and then scale to 1920x1080.
