It is an odd state of affairs. Apple have a 60% market share (of
smartphones) in the USA, which sort of implies that either a) customers
like the product or b) customers feel they can’t leave

UK market share is around 50%.

No customer is forced to buy any Apple product or subscribe to any of
their services.

The US seems to be very hostile to monopolies (or near-monopolies).

I would suggest that VISA is fairly close to a monopoly within the US ?

Life is different if you're a monopoly. What is 'growing your business' to
you equals 'abusing your monopoly power' to your competitors. This is why
monopolies are more tightly regulated than healthy markets.

Hardly. It's very much laissez-faire.

Apple has been very successful in the developed countries because Apple's
fundamental business strategy of lying until they get caught works out for
them.

Very few companies outside of Big Pharma and Big Tobacco can afford losing
those enormous lawsuits Apple always loses for being unethical by design.

But Apple has enough capital to operate outside of the law until caught.

The theory is that having a working market drives up quality and drives
down prices. However, if you have an effective monopoly, you no longer
have a working market, as the monopoly owner control price, quality, etc.
