Oh, yeah. Epic's doing freebies too. I forgot all about that.
Fortunately, our formicidaen friend picked up the slack.

I'm not crazy about "The Outer Worlds". Not that it's a bad game, but
it's not really to my taste. It's more or less what "Starfield" should
have been (and what most people expected it to be), except as seen
through the warped eyes of the Obsidian Entertainment developers. Its
sense of humor just wasn't something I enjoyed, and - even as much as
I usually like Bethesda-style RPGs, I was already getting tired of
them by the time "The Outer Worlds" came out ("Starfield", therefore,
hadn't a chance).

But I think it's a game that deserves a second chance... after a few
years or so have passed, and (hopefully) Bethesda-style RPGs seem
fresh again.

In the meantime, sure, I'll grab another copy on Epic. Why not?

Ooh, nice! I had planned to buy the DLCs and play it again at some
point, now I don't have to buy the DLCs!

I rather enjoyed playing it even though I wouldn't class it as a good
game but instead all that it does it does ok. What it did suffer from
though was an expectation that this was a spiritual successor to FO:NV
when it's really quite different.

Talking of FO, FO:London now has a release date of end of first quarter
2024. Fingers crossed that the devs have done a good job and I can
finally think that FO:4 wasn't a waste of money!

Fallout London? Wasn't that called Hellgate London?

So what, now we're going to have Super Mutants with bad teeth?

I have both of the DLC's and rather disappointed to be honest. The big
problem I had with the first one is in navigating the map as you didn't
just have to go in the general direction but also find the correct path
to avoid the inaccessible parts. I found that really put me off.

Fallout London is a super-mod for Fallout 4, to be released sometime
in April 2024. Made by fans, it will be a free add-on. It roughly
equals Fallout 4 in size (it's actually a bit larger in some
respects), and includes an entirely new world (London, natch),
monsters, quests, armor and weapons... pretty much everything. It is,
essentially, a brand new game in the Fallout universe... except it's
free and not made by Bethesda.

Fans of the franchise are, understandably, excited.

Here, I found a video for you that highlights its features:

It's one of the things I have always liked about Bethesda, they have
always embraced the modding community.

Other game companies try to make it impossible to mod and, in their
worlds 'cheat", but Bethesda has always said "have at it, lets see what
you can do."

I was mostly just going for the funny, (Austin Powers English bad teeth
shtick, thus super mutants with bad teeth...) but thanks for this.

I am a bit more jaded then that about Bethesda. Their games
practically require modding... and I think they know it.

And Bethesda has repeatedly attempted to monetize the modding
community too. They aren't saintly. Sure, kudos to them for not
shutting down the modders like some companies might (Capcom, for
instance, equates modding with piracy)...but a lot of those mods are
made simply to correct the mistakes Bethesda refuses to fix.

I'd say *probably* the best pro-modding companies is Valve (allows most
mods and only blocks by file when joining official servers, workshop,
hiring amateur devs twice to make their games)

Except they did. Fallout '76 where it's all under their control. It
only took them a couple years to get it to a playable state. I'm
somewhat surprised they managed to do that.

I'm very much looking forward to it especially as I found FO:4
disappointing. The reason I loved FO:3/NV was you could just go out
there and explore the wasteland for all of those mini-stories. FO:4 just
didn't seem to have that but instead a lot more of kill bad guys grab
the loot locations. Then there was the base building, did anyone ask for
that.

Overall it felt that they'd just made a game with lots of cheap content
so that could still reach that 80+ hours of game time claim.

I'm really looking forward to FO:London as well and hoping for the
best. Looks like it might be all FO content for this decade if FO5 is
sometime in 2030s... Not considering '76 although I might play it at
some point.

I guess I've found Fallout 3, NV and 4 fairly disappointing all but also
interesting. In my FO4 playthrough I ended up just grinding the never
ending repeato quests to level up to where I wanted to be, then played
through some faction quests and main plot. Most different endings too. I
kinda wanted to do the peace ending but that felt like too much work.

But still, my sneaker build was fun to play. Boom! Headshot! is fun and
even more fun with a 3x sneak attack bonus (or however much it was.)

Base building and Minutemen I skipped almost completely. I guess biggest
use of that interface was to break stuff up to component parts.

I'm not as sanguine about "New Vegas", but I get where you're coming
from. Still, it would be unfair to say that "Fallout 4" didn't have a
surplus of wander-and-ye-shall-find mini-quests. In number, it
probably equalled that found in other games. Of course, that
experience was diluted both by Fallout 4's larger map size, the awful
procedural missions, and a lot of unexciting, under-developed areas.
The whole thing made "Fallout 4" feel less robust in its
world-building overall. But if you searched, there were a lot of nifty
corners and stories to uncover.

It's still the worst game in the (single-player) franchise, though.

TL;DR: I too am hoping "Fallout: London" gives "Fallout 4" a reason
for existing.

Hmm. I think you just hit the nail on the head of why I didn't care
much for a lot of open world games. There's nothing really interesting
to find or do, it's just a lot of the same thing with minor variation
over and over. There was still a lot more things to stumble across in
fallout 4 than a lot of open world games.

Also one of the reasons I didn't care much for NV, it was fairly linear
without the usual random things you could find for the most part.

Funny enough I remember '76 as having a lot more interesting stuff to
stumble upon than either NV or fallout 4.

Then there's all the AC/FC games and the like, which really have very
little interesting beyond some more of the same guys to sneak past/kill.

Yeah. As I remember someone saying, "It's better to have a well-designed
linear experience than a poorly designed non-linear experience."
