Mac OS:
Just found that Proton mail can be accessed via Mac's Apple Mail app
with the use of a "bridge" from Proton.

Has anyone tried this?

iOS:
Likewise Proton mail can be accessed via an iPhone - but only via a web
browser - this sucks (I don't actually access e-mail on my phone very
much, but it is handy from time to time).

Correction: using the ProtonMail app from the app store.

I use the Protonmail-App which ensures the encryption.

Why not just set the x-platform protonmail iOS app to be the default MUA?
https://apps.apple.com/app/apple-store/id979659905
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=ch.protonmail.android

Do they not have a similar program for the desktops & laptops?

Yep. I've been using it for a while now. Bridge has been updated
regularly, and there were some hiccups with a couple updates last year
that required you to delete, add, and reconfigure accounts in Bridge due
to errors stemming from some refactoring of the Bridge cache. Other than
that, it's been smooth sailing.

Bridge acts as an intermediary between Proton servers and the local mail
client, so it downloads messages into its own cache, then serves them to
the local mail client. So if you have a lot of messages on the server,
it can take a little while for all of them to be downloaded and appear
in your mail client.

Actually, Proton has an iOS mail app, and while it's not as
fully-featured as Apple's Mail client, it works very well IME:

<https://apps.apple.com/us/app/proton-mail-encrypted-email/id979659905>

Proton offers a highly secure set of services that fully end-to-end
encrypt all of the data stored. They also have calendar, drive, and VPN
services that are top-notch. I'm using Proton for all of the mail on my
domain (several different users, multiple accounts) and it's been great.
I haven't made any use of the calendar or drive services, but I do use
the VPN service 24/7 in a Linux VM and on iOS, and it's been excellent
as well. They iterate fairly quickly, and their apps tend to be on the
lighter side as far as features go, but in general they are reliable and
very secure. Highly recommended.

No. Instead, you use Proton Bridge with your favorite desktop mil

I forgot to mention that with some Proton packages, you get SimpleLogin
for free:

<https://simplelogin.io>

SimpleLogin is integrated with Proton, and gives you the ability to
create anonymous email aliases on the fly. In other words you don't even
have to log in or create them - you can just think of one (example:
bestbuy@yourdomain.simplelogin.com - just one of several formats
available), give it to someone, and the moment an email arrives to that
address it gets created and tracked automatically. You can configure
different aliases to forward to different addresses, see a history of
messages sent to each alias, and enable and disable them. It's a pretty
handy service.

Unfortunately the current Bridge v. available isn't compatible with the
current v. of Mac OS on this iMac. I've sent a message to them to see
if there is an older v. of Bridge that I can install. With the issues
you point out above, it might not be worth it - I can use the web version.

Doesn't matter much - I foresee this iMac being relegated to server or
something sometime this year - if Apple can get the lead out on the next
Mx version.

Yeah - Caught up to that just after posting. The app is installed and
works fine.

I did notice that - hadn't given it much thought, but yes such would be

The issues I mentioned only pertained to installing a couple specific
Bridge updates, so they wouldn't be a problem if you stuck with a single
