I have 3 usb sticks:

1. Windows 7 to go
2. Sparky Linux
3. Windows 11

Only windows 11 will boot on new computer, not the other two ?! Why ?!?

Only windows 7 will boot on laptop, windows 11 shows a square and sparky linux fails.

Can't remember if it were 32 or 64 bit versions, does it even matter ?!?

I think they were all 64 bit versions.

I checked with a tool called: "LinuxReader" for windows to confirm stick 2 contains Sparky Linux or at least some kind of linux version !

Both computers failed to boot Linux. No wonder it has no market share on the desktop ! ;)

Bye,
Skybuck.

I haven't tried Sparky. Linux distros can get in trouble, if you selected
the NVidia driver instead of Nouveau. You put the Nouveau driver back, before
moving the hard drive from one machine to another, if you do not know what to
expect.

Nouveau, is a "generic" driver, while NVidia is a "custom" driver, where you
know there will always be a modern NVidia card present. When you remove a Custom
driver, using an application such as Linux "Driver Manager", the OS is then free to
select from the available, inbox, drivers. When you "force" it to use the NVidia
one, it feels duty bound to always use the NVidia one. That's why you take
it off the "custom" driver and go back to "generic", so it has a chance to
adapt at boot time on its own.

Other than that, you edit the boot line, and remove "quiet splash" from
the boot line, then press F10 to start the boot. That way, the text messages
during boot are displayed.

If the Sparky disc (DVD) is a LiveCD and you don't have to install Sparky,
that is more likely to work. Live media usually boots OK.

Some media, such as the Gentoo installer,
are install-only medias, and there is only text to look at.

To get Knoppix 5.3.1 DVD (really old) to run on my newer computers, I found the "noacpi"
setting helps. Initially, I had given up hope of ever getting that to run, and
just tried that option one day, and it seemed to work. Knoppix is an example of
a distro not intended to be installed on a hard drive, but, you can put it on a hard
drive if you wish. It's designed mainly, to run as a Live session, from a DVD. You
can also load the Knoppix DVD into RAM, and pop out the DVD, so that the DVD is not
always spinning.

*******

I hope you've run memtest on the new machine, to
prove the memory is working well. I don't expect
a problem, but it is the first step after you finish
a build.

https://www.memtest.org/ # 50% down page, right-hand side, "Windows USB" will load a USB stick

You can laugh at my Optiplex with Core2 processor choices.
The memtest lists the cache speeds. The memory speed is
particularly bad. Being an Optiplex, I cannot adjust the memory
settings, in any way. I changed processors, but the stupid
thing would not run the RAM at DDR3-1333 as I was hoping.
I gave it some very good RAM, RAM that runs DDR3-2400 in
another life.

E7500 E8400
L1 39.1GB/sec 40.0GB/sec
L2 16.9GB/sec 18.5GB/sec
DDR3-1066 3.58GB/sec 3.85GB/sec

I have Windows 10 running on that. It's a bit slow.

There is no sign of life from the Sparky or Mint Linux or whatever the usb stick was...

It doesn't do anything... weird or what...

It worked fine on my old DreamPC from 2006.

Hmmm come to think of it, I did have some bootable CDs, I am starting to doubt if I put Sparky Linux on a CD or DVD, but I don't think so, cause the CD/DVD drive is long dead ! ;)

Knoppix sounds really old :)

Maybe a good idea, but first I want to install windows 11 and get an idea of what temperatures to aspect, I think this will be safer then to run a full blown memory test, without knowing what the temperature is doing ;)

Probably still way faster than the machines I am using.

Here some tips to speed it up:

1. Keep an eye on Firefox, disable localstorage/webstorage.
2. Keep pagefile same size, min and max the same setting.
3. Consider defragging harddisk, something I should do on my HP laptop, but never get to it.
4. Disable unnecessary services./servers/apps/etc. To safe memory and make thread schedular respond/cycle faster.

Use task manager and resource monitor to see what the system is doing, especially the harddisks/drives...

Let me know if you know how to do this ? If not maybe I make special video for you, showing what to look for ! ;)

Bye for now,
Skybuck.

You can install Ryzen Master after you get Windows installed, and
then you can watch the dynamics of your system a bit. I don't
"adjust" anything in there, just use it for watching whether the
cooling is working right. You may find that some other utilities
(and even Linux), do not recognize the SuperIO hardware monitor.

https://i.postimg.cc/pLsp6jgm/Install-Ryzen-Master-To-Watch-Params.gif

It's cooled by one of these. It took a few tries to install it.
Couldn't get the screws to engage at first.

DEEPCOOL AK620 Zero Dark

https://www.memoryexpress.com/Products/MX00123526

"Heat Dissipation Up to 260W"

At first, I thought they were crazy, but it does work.
It's not as good as a liquid loop (obviously), but
it did correct the temperature spiking I was seeing with a Noctua
cooler. That's my second cooler for the project. I had to add a
fan to blow at VCore, to keep it at a reasonable temperature.
and that fan (an old Antec) vibrates (it is just about worn out).

Hmm I am not sure if I trust Ryzen Master, it might overclock the cpu or screw other settings and then cause damage.

I was more thinkinf hardware monitor... something which doesn't influence anything/settings, but just "observes" ;)

Concerning the Noctua Cooler, which paste material did you use ?

The noctua paste smears to easy and can lead to "pump out" over time...

Basically the paste gets pushed out. I actually noticed this on the HP laptop.

Re-pasted it with artic silver 5 and it's been running like a dream for now..

Bye,

At the computer store, tubes of AS5 sit in the ashtray next to the cash.

Of course my two coolers were both buttered with AS5.

It seems to take a bit longer to bed down, than my previous AS3.

What was pretty funny, is I didn't ask the floor staff where the AS5 was,
I went up and asked the cashier. And she just points at the ashtray.
Which is right next to her.

The only reason I'm using AS5, is my tube of AS3 ran out.

I don't know if you've noticed, but GoogleGroups has been spamming the shit
out of some groups like comp.lang.c and the E-S administrator is getting
tired of this.

Communications for GoogleGroups users could be degraded, by the asymmetric
warfare between Google and the other USENET servers.

You should move to a USENET server, if you expect non-GoogleGroup users
to see your posts.

paganini.bofh.team port 119 does not require an account, as an example.

AIOE is gone.

netfront is read only.

news.mixmin.net port 563, may have shut off posting, because of
complaints to its COLO operator or ISP or whatever.

There aren't a lot of choices, short of getting an account on
one of the other servers.
