Thanks Paul. Actually, after I'd sent this, I woke up in the middle of
the night and thought "Ah! DiscKnight to the rescue."

Now I've done that. It found 4 faults . 2 it has repaired but 2 it
seemingly can't.

I re-ran the check & repair options several times.

The C
> File $.Lost+Found.File00143D79 found

> File $.Lost+Found.File00143EE8 found
Unable create directory entry for $.Lost+Found, move files and run again

---------------------------------------------
6192 faults corrected, rerun required
---------------------------------------------

Th Check output at the end is thus...

> File ?.File00143D7A found

> File ?.File00143EE8 found

---------------------------------------------
Disc is bad, 5897 faults found
Run a repair (-f and -u flags) to fix
---------------------------------------------

The Repair output at the end is thus....

It's as though it keeps repairing them & then finding them again.

The machine is a Raspberry Pi4 with RISC OS 5.28. The disc is an SSD
SCSI named PiHard.
It has 42 GB free so I can't see why DiscKnight can't create a Lost &
Found directory unless there is that much corruption, which seems
unlikely as the machine is working perfectly and the broken directory has
now gone.
I tried *Verify PiHard and in theblink of an eye it reported Verified OK
so either the SSD is not being checked or the disc is fine.

I'm puzzled.

A follow up. The Check output has

* 5893 objects in map not referenced by directories

but that number changes each time I run a check.

Do you have the latest version of DiscKnight? I believe v1.55 is the
latest. If not, update here: https://armclub.org.uk/products/discknight/

Yep. I'm using that.
If I do "Free" on the drive now it reports that it has used 112GB of its
112GB with 175 Mbytes left. Just before the last run with DiscKnight it
was 70 GB. Something seems to have trampled all over it.

I presume DiscKnight has no problems with SSDs. There is no caveat in the
instructions.

Does *Verify work on the Pi with an SSD? On the icon bar menu verify is
greyed out.

I would suggest getting in touch with "DiscKnight Support"

I'm getting there. I managed to use Shift/Power on to by pass !Boot.
(This is sometimes a bit flaky on he Pi & doesn't always work). I got to
the desktop & ran DiscKnight several times. It now reports it's cleared
all the faults.

All I have to do now is discover why the backup I took a few days ago
reports 63GB used but the disc in the machine reports 112GB used. Nothing
has been added to account for that.

DiscKnight says it cannot create the Lost & Found directory in the hard
drive but the report referre to lots of files thus.

Unable create directory entry for $.Lost+Found, move files and run again

Is there a phantom Lost+Found directory somewhere?

I've deleted it but hard disc still reports it's nearly full. Can't yet
see why.

Does * Verify work with 5.28 on an SSD.

When DiscKnight repairs a broken directory, it may find a lot of files
and other directories which it then needs to put back in the directory
structure for you to look at. It needs to create a Lost+Found directory
in $ for this.

The reason for failure to create $.Lost+Found may be the disc is full,
or if you haven't rebooted after a previous repair.

Did you have recover deleted files checked? It's not a good idea to use
this unless I've advised it is necessary.

> Oooh er! Spookily, the Lost+Found file has mysteriously now manifested

Remember you need to reboot after doing a repair, or RISC OS wont not
see the changes DiscKnight has made to the disc.

> That must be taking up he space. I shall investigate it then delete as

The files in there may have numeric names and no types where the
directory information has been lost, they will need to be manually
inspected to see if they contain anything important.

When that's done the entire $.Lost+Found directory, as it can take up a
considerable amount of space.

Please email me on the support address if you need any more assistance.

Thanks, Druck. Done all that now including removing the Lost+Found file.

I'm writing this from the RiscPC as unfortunately the Pi is not running
!Boot it would seem. I get past the R-Comp log in protection OK then I
get an endless hour glass. Alt/Break gets Press Stop to terminate
ShareFS. Doing that gets me to a bare-bones desktop.
Disc still says it's full but I can't see what with. It was about 70 GB
full with 43 GB free before all this started.
This desktop showed the SD card which does have a Verify option. I chose
that. It didn't verify the SD card but did verify the PiHard main drive
as OK (after a very long time, as expected, so it seems to have checked
it correctly).
As suggested in the R5 User Guide, I'm just trying Boot.Choices from my
backup in case that had been messed up.
I have no idea how the computer reads the space on the disc. Is that a
piece of software somewhere?
I removed over 1GB of photos to a pen drive but when I re-booted it still
reported only 8MB free. I then removed more stuff to get the Choices out
of the way safe.
Watch this space.

Pi now booting correctly with Choices from backup.
DiscKnight reports disc is good.

Hard disc still nearly full. There must be lots of stuff I can't
see/access.

maybe I didn't re-boot after on of the several DiscKnight repairs I did &
now whatever isthere can't be referenced. Hmmmnnn. A puzzle.

Maybe my best plan is to manual copy everything I need off the main drive
to a backup disc, then format the main drive and put it all back again.
No mean task.

If the main drive is formatted, will the machine start so I can put
everything back. Hmmmm. I wish I knew more about these things instead of
having to ask silly questions.

Are you using any sort of safe delete program, which isn't actually
deleting stuff?

!DiscSpace is very useful to work out where stuff is hiding.

If you can't find out what is happening on the disc, this may be best.

If power up with a formatted drive, it will boot to a minimal desktop.
However its easier if you put a copy of the disc image for your OS
version on it. Then you will have a full desktop, and copying from
backups will be easier.

Thanks Druck. That's done it. I use Fred Gaut'es Transient. DiscSpace
flagged up that the directory where I keep the discarded files purports
to be 72GB so it's not shedding them or constantly trapping things I'm
trying to get rid of. . That's where the original broken directory was.
Tomorrow's job is to see how I can get rid of it.

Never mind tomorrow, just tried closing Transient & deleting its saved
stuff. Didn't take long. Whoopee! My missing Gigabytes have re-appeared.
Can't thank you enough for the tip re DiscSpace.

Have you tried !DiscSpace to see what is on the disc?

Close down all running applications, perform another repair, and reboot
immediately after, that will ensure DiscKnight and RISC OS agree what is
on there.

Ah great!

Yes, that's how I found where all the dross was. See my previous post.
I was sure I had stopped transient but it's bin was still full of
mountains of stuff I'd discarded. Must have got itself in a Mobious loop.

All sorted now. Pi is working perfectly.
Thanks again for your help.

Have you rebooted inbetween checks? I have found over the years this can
make a difference.

I have used DiscKnight for years with a CompactFlash on my A9home. It has
always fixed any issues.
