VirtualDiskImageConverter.

i install this too:

QEMU Virtual Disk Image Converter

to bring some sense to this confusing world.

PLEASE MAKE THINGS MORE SIMPLE OK.

There are two kinds of formats for virtual disk storage.

You can define a "fixed" disk. It might be 150GB for example.
It would not change in size. If a 20GB OS is stored inside,
then 130GB is wasted space. This is typical of QEMU, as
QEMU I don't think it has support for anything except dumb formats.

In a smart format, sections of disk drive which are all-zeros,
do not need to be stored in the image. Only the "occupied" portions
are stored. This makes the file "dynamic", a 20GB OS takes... 20GB
of storage on your virtual machine storage area. The disk can
still have a maximum size defined. You could tell the tool making
the disk in the first place, to make the container 150GB if you want,
but if 20GB of OS files are stored, it still only takes 20GB storage.
That is the advantage of dynamic.

With a dumb format, sometimes when you do a P2V, it consists of the
Physical Sectors, with a 1KB header and a trailer attached to the file.
This allowed some early conversion tools, to convert a "dd" dump
in a second or so, to a virtual container (by pre-pending metadata).
Later tools didn't do it cleverly, and made entire copies instead
(they preserved the original .dd file).

QEMU is an acquired taste. Some hosting softwares, may be using
QEMU as their engine for example, so you may end up using it
without knowing it is the engine (Gnome-Boxes?). However, for those hosting
softwares, they may add code to include support for smart formats.

I can guarantee you will curse and swear, before you get a
QEMU working properly. I have done a QEMU-KVM in Linux, and
it took quite a while to figure it out.

The commercial tools are more opaque, and if a commercial virtual
machine "slows down", you won't have a clue what is going on.
I have that problem with VirtualBox on this machine, slow operation
or crashes, depending on what I'm doing (VirtualBox on W11Home).
The older VirtualBox running on the Windows 7 machine, does not
give me nearly as much trouble.

Of course VirtualBox, the latest version has "passthru TPM", but
it does not have "SWTPM" (software TPM) that VMWare has.

I have not installed Windows 11 in VirtualBox.
I have installed Windows 11 in VMWare Workstation Player, and the
ingredient to make that work, is "obtaining an empty container
which is already encrypted". That's what it took. I pop in the
Win11 DVD, the empty container, and just install it the
regular way.

[Picture] "Not a lot of detail, as it is VMWare"

My method was here.

http://al.howardknight.net/?STYPE=msgid&MSGI=%3Csl77ll%244mu%241%40gioia.aioe.org%3E

The container to start with, is this. That's an empty VMDK with password 12345.

https://github.com/RMITBLOG/Win11Compat/blob/main/Windows%2011%20Template.tar

You can see how clever that github person was. This is an empty VMDK you
can use. Select the Download as ZIP for the project, and it'll be in there.
The format is 4G chunks, and once you install Windows in a copy of the
template, the space used by the files is not compressible. You simply
select "tar" format, if wishing to put all the files for the machine,
in one place. As the files cannot be compressed. Each file is encrypted
inside.
