No, I haven't. Also, your newsreader seems to have a bug since it's
quoting something I haven't posted.

I use Pan and slrn. What does "acting up" mean? Which version are you using,
which OS?

Pan is the best graphical newsreader in Linux, IMHO. If you're using an old
version, then you're better off upgrading and seeing if that fixes whatever
issue you're having.

I'm confused. Seems okay to me. db started a thread, and Moock replied
to db. That's what I see. Moock cited only [part of] the OP's article.

I don't see Moock citing anything from any of your posts. His
References header only had one MID, and it was from db's post.

I think 's|b' was just confused, seeing what he thought was his screen
name in the attribution, but it was actually 'db', not 's|b':

As you've been told, Emacs is an enormous do-everything package,
including the dirty dishes in your kitchen. Gnus is in that package.

apt can only locate packages among the package sources you've told your
system to search in. There may come a time that you look for the package
source yourself and download it manually and then run dpkg or another
package manager to install it.

I use emacs all the time and didn't know it can read News. But I can't
find that feature in its menu. Where is it?

Menu "Tools | Read Net News".

Or by keystroke: "M-x gnus RET".

But you have to have a reasonable "~/.gnus.el" file.

Example:

| (setq gnus-select-method '(nntp "SERVER.IDENTIFICATION" (nntp-open-connection-function nntp-open-ssl-stream) (nntp-port-number 563) (nntp-address "YOUR.SERVER.HERE")))

| (setq message-yank-prefix ">")

| (setq gnus-show-threads nil)
| (setq gnus-summary-line-format "%U%R %o %8N %I%(%[%4L: %-23,23f%]%) %s\n")
| (setq gnus-visible-headers ".*")
| (setq gnus-article-date-headers 'original)
| (setq fill-column nil)
| (setq message-user-organization "YOUR.ORGANIZATION")
| (add-to-list 'message-required-news-headers 'Organization t)

| (setq gnus-treat-fill-article nil)
| (setq gnus-treat-fill-long-lines nil)

Honestly, I just prefer Thunderbird because the quoting looks nicer and
you can download all messages for offline reading.

Am I the only one in the world who uses knode? Years ago I decided I
like it better than pan, but I don't remember the reasons.

I used Knode 20 years ago and liked it. I liked the original Pan of
that time too, but the modern rewrite of Pan was too full of problems
for me to persevere with it.

I'm an unreconstructed Mac user now, wedded to my ancient MacSOUP.

I really liked Knode. As KDE does, they have removed it (unsupported) and
it's gone from Debian repos. Seems many think, "just use Thunderbird for
news", but it's not a good newsreader in my opinion.

Pan was nice, but now it doesn't show buttons on windows for me, and other
problems. I've given up on Pan now.

I'm using Sylpheed, which I like, but I find it irritating when it checks
groups while you're reading a message, then that message gets marked as read,
and disappears from the headers (using Show Unread). Going back to look for
it is a pain. Other than that, it's not too bad.

knode is still available in Opensuse 15.5 - not in the default
distribution, but in one of their subsidiary repositories.

Yes, kde do seem to have a rather microsoftish view of what users
need/want.

I'll have to look into that. I'd like to run it (knode) if I can, even
just to mess with it.

Btw, I also miss OS/2 Newsreader/2 :)

That was a bug which has been corrected, I think a year or so ago. If your
repos don't have a later version, get it from source over at the gnome dev
site:
