Got it thanks.

Strategy game if anyone's wondering. Probably won't play it, but you
never know.

Grabbed it. Thank you for the notification (although I'm not sure why
I didn't see it, since I check GOG repeatedly just so I can pre-empt
you on these announcements ;-)

According to the webpage: "Nomads of Driftland is an RTS game
initially created as an add-on to Driftland: The Magic Revival. Since
it is significantly different from the base game, we decided to
release it as a standalone expansion and make it available for free. "
So basically it's intended as a demo for the original game, something
to convince new users to buy "Driftland". Not a complaint - it gets me
a free game, after all! - but it makes me wonder how much actual
content this game provides.

Not that I've any real intention of playing it anyway. My interest in
RTS games has greatly decreased since the genre's heyday in the early
2000s. It was never my favorite genre (when it came to strategy, I was
always more of a 4X person) and - even though "Nomads" nominal has 4X
qualities too - there's little to this game that looks particularly
interesting to me.

Other than that it's free and increments The Number by one, of course.

Setting wise, the game greatly reminds me both of "Stratosphere" (an
RTS game I'm sure nobody here remembers) and "Project Nomads" (a
third-person shooter I'm sure people also don't remember). But both
featured floating islands.

I'm scared. I didn't own this one yet. Isn't that one of the signs of
the Apocalypse?

Heh. Did the e-mail even mention it? I skimmed through it before seeing
it on a third party web site.

Come to think of it, I didn't even get an email from GOG about it
(although usually those arrive /after/ I've already discovered the
freebie on the site. GOG webmasters really should run a 'did user
already claim freebie?' script on their mass-mailings and cull out the
ones who already have the game. But over the years I've accrued quite
a bad opinion of GOG's marketing team, so I am not at all surprised
that they don't do that ;-)

A correction, though, to my initial reply:

Apparently the freebie is not only for the DLC, but for the entire
package (base game + DLC).

But, of course, GOG manages to do things bass-ackward, as usual. The
free offer initially just puts the DLC into your library. However,
when you go to actually download it, the website complains that you
don't have the base game, at which point you are redirected to 'buy'
the base game for $0.00 USD (convert to local currency as necessary
;-). Once you do that, you can download both the base game and DLC
package.

Because why do it all in one transaction, right GOG? Geez. I love the
service, but the guys running their website and marketing are not the
brightest bulbs.

Still, I got a free game out of 'em, after all. And since its
expansion and base game, there's a good amount of content there after
all. So I guess I can't complain too much. ;-)
