I have a 2015 13" iPad Pro with iOS 11 installed. I have been trying
to upgrade it to the latest iPadOS 15.6. I have even wiped it clean
(factory reset). I have tried to reset it with my iPhone X (iOS 15.6)
nearby, and I have tried to reset it manually. Nothing works.

iTunes on my MacBook Pro will not touch it when I plug it in, saying
that the OS is "too old".

The update gets stuck at the message "Estimating time remaining..." and
stays there; I have waited over 24 hours.

Does anyone know how I can upgrade my iPad Pro from iOS 11 to iPadOS 15.6?

ps: By the way, I have a second 2015 13" iPad Pro that I use regularly
and upgrade regularly; it is at iPadOS 15.6 and has no issues.

although that's a big jump, it doesn't matter. the update doesn't care
what's currently installed.

try using dfu mode, and then restore from your macbook:

if dfu mode doesn't work, then the next step is bring both to an apple
store and have them resolve it.

iTunes... that must be a really old version of macOS you're running on
that thing.

That's very likely a network issue, possibly caused by a problem with
your router.

Try rebooting your router. Also try doing the update while connected to
a different network.

This is not a question of supported models, as you would know if you had
bothered to read the link you posted. Or even read the entire OP.

This particular model even supports iPadOS 16.

I'm running iTunes 12.8.3.1 on macOS 10.13.6 (High Sierra) on a 2010
17" MacBook Pro.

Okay, but this is the same Wi-Fi network that I use to upgrade my other
(identical) iPad Pro and iPhone X and Apple Watch 6. And the problem
iPad Pro is able to use this same Wi-Fi network when I launch Safari to
browse the web. It's just the upgrade to iPadOS 15.6 that fails.

Does the update ever actually download? Have you tried turning on
Automatic Updates, just to see if it downloads?

Just curious here, but why did you leave this iPad on iOS 11 for so long?

he has two of them, so maybe he wasn't using that one very much.

That’s no excuse. I now have 10 iPads here. Use them all nearly every
day and all are current. 😎

I did skip iPadOS 13 because it was such a train wreck. But I have never
been 4 major versions behind.

That doesn't preclude there being a network issue for that particular
LAN IP or device on the LAN. So, my advice stands.

Also, have you contacted Apple support for assistance with this issue
yet? What are you waiting for?

To provide a follow-up: two days ago, Apple released iPadOS 15.6.1. I
paused the initial update (the one that kept on failing) and tried to
update from iOS 11 to iPadOS 15.6.1. It worked! I have no
explanantion why the update to iPadOS 15.6 failed, but the update to
iPadOS 15.6.1 worked flawlessly. If you know, please share your
insight.

Often problems like that are the result of temporary network issues.

You don't need an official "Apple Store". Any Apple authorised repair
centre will do - it used to be easy to find a list on the Apple
website, but it's no longer seems to be possible. :-(
