Is any of you here using the Kindle app to read Amazon books on the
phone or tablet? I have an issue with that on my LG phone and wonder if
anybody else encountered it before.

I have a Kindle app on everything I own. What's the problem?

BTW I prefer the Google Play Books app because it syncs better. The
Kindle is forever losing my place between devices. (Maybe that's your
problem?) And the same ebooks are the same price in both stores for the
most part. Unfortunately (for me) Kindle has a better selection (for my
wants) and a book I want is often only available there. But just for the
heck of it you might also give the Google app a try in the future.

Yes, I use Adroid Kindle occasionally, and it just works.

The best way to describe the problem is seeing it on the following video
I made with another phone:

https://streamable.com/r4t9ci

As you see, the main reading page only flashes up, then it is followed
by a blank page view. Then touching that one shows only the scrolling
small pages.

The next video shows the correct functioning on another phone. Till last
week that's how it used to work on my LG G6 phone, too:

https://streamable.com/bzp2xc

So I think something happened to my phone that causes this but have no
idea what. I thought somebody among you might have a clue.

Unless you have other problems with your phone I think it is probably
the Kindle app.

First I'd try just rebooting the phone. Just a guess. That fixes a lot
and is the easiest if it works.

If that fails, next I'd try going to Settings>apps>Kindle>Storage and
clear the cache and data. Then restart the app, sign on, and and reload
the book.

If that doesn't work then the only other thing I can think of is the
nuclear option. Delete the app, download a fresh copy, and bring it up
from scratch. Good luck.

I tried all those things before I posted here, but that did not work.
But just the last hour something occured to me that a similar issue
popped up a couple years ago, but then it was my checkbook app that
suddenly stopped working. I tracked it down to a recent update of my IP
Cam app that was then fixed with the next IP Cam update. So I figured
maybe the same thing happened this time. To test that, I uninstalled
that app and sure enough, suddenly my Kindle app works again. I don't
know what that Robert Chou does with his IP Cam updates, but I won't
reinstall it again. Too bad, because I paid for it and found it working
pretty well.
So there is that. Sorry for causing this alarm and wasting your time.
Wasting mine should have been enough.

Wow. Weird. Never would have thought of that. Not a problem on the time.
Glad you got it fixed.

Sorry, I rushed that answer again. It is true that the Kindle app
started working normally the first time I ran it after uninstalling that
IP cam app. However, when I wanted to run Kindle the second time and
every time after that, the problem manifested itself again. So that's
where I am now and I ran out of any ideas to try again. Lucky that last
year my phone company gifted me an Honor 20 Lite phone, running Android
10 that I've been using as a stand-by reserve with Wi-Fi only, because
Kindle runs fine on that one. I think I'll retire my LG phone sometime
later this year after I see what shows up in the phone market in the
meantime.

Well, if you've tried everything above, there's still the super nuclear
option: a factory reset. Another much easier option might be to just
read your Kindle ebook in your phone's browser. I sometimes do that on
my Chromebook as the Android Kindle app sometimes runs a bit flakey on it.

It would be too much work to restore everything to the current status
after a factory reset. BTW, I checked into the comments in the Play
Store at the Kindle app and I saw several ones that complained about the
same problem. They think the last update caused the problem. Maybe the
next update will fix it, or a roll-back of the last one.

As to reading Kindle books in the browser ... What URL would you put
into the address bar for that?

This is the address I use in the Chromebook browser to read Kindle
ebooks. They call it a Cloud Reader. (It also works on this Windows
laptop's Chrome browser.) But I had never tried it on a phone browser. I
just ASSumed that it would work. But I just tried it and it won't work
on my phone's Chrome browser. Perhaps you'll have better luck with your
browser but I kinda doubt it. So cancel that idea.

BTW the Android Kindle app on my Chromebook started acting up recently
after years of trouble free service (the Chromebook is well over 3 years
old now). I'm reading along and the screen just goes blank. All I have
to do is touch the screen or trackpad and it comes right back. But a
shade darker. Our Kindle apps seem to have a personality of their own...

Thanks for the Cloud Reader address and it only works in my Windows
browser, but not in Android. I seem to recall that it was discontinued
on Android recently. I tried it on Chrome, Firefox and Edge browsers on
my phone to no avail. In its place some Android tutorial comes up about
how to use a Notebook or something.

I searched a bit but could find nothing definite on which browsers are
supposed to work with the Cloud Reader.

I was afraid of that.

I got the same result from several Cloud Reader search links, even from
inside Amazon. Weird.

I also discovered that the desktop Chrome browser has a Kindle
Cloud Reader Extension available. Didn't know that. So I installed it.
It looks pretty much like the Cloud Reader webpage (link above) except
it is full screen and puts an icon on the taskbar.

So I currently have 3 different Kindle readers that work in my Windows
Chrome Browser: The extension, the web site, and the Windows Kindle app
from the Microsoft Store. But unfortunately apparently only one Kindle
app works (or doesn't work as the case may be) on our phones...

In case you want to roll-back, but don't have the APK of a/the
previous version, the apkpure.com site has several/many previous
versions.

The best APK is the APK that was installed when you installed it.
The best time to save that best APK is when you installed it.
And the best way is all that should be done automatically for you.

Best, IMHO, is to set up your Google Play download to not delete the APK.
It downloads it - and installs it - but you turn off subsequent deletion.
The only problem with this method is you have to know how to set this up.

If you don't want to set up your Google Play download to "not delete" the
APK that you installed from Google Play, the next best thing is to install
an automatic backup app which saves each APK you install from Google Play
(and if set up to do so, it also saves every version of that APK you install
from Google Play) automatically at the time you install that APK from Google
Play.

A third best way to roll back (if you still have the old version installed)
is to use that same automatic backup app to _extract_ the APK you have now.

All that is better than scrounging around the Internet looking for the APK.

Only in _last_ place would I suggest bumming around the net to hunt for what
you hope is an untampered copy of the exact app APK version you liked best.

As an experiment I set the Android Dolphin browser on my phone to report as
a desktop browser. After signing in and requiring 2FA it still says it's a
non-supported browser. You'd think it would just tell me that BEFORE the
sign-in hassle. So Amazon wins yet again...

In what directory are the installed APKs stored? I'm afraid that a
recent clean-up may have deleted the old APKs.

My installed version is 8.42.0.100, updated on May 17.
Your link's latest version is 8.41.0.100, dated April 24, but has 2
variants. So one of those (probably the arm-64 variant) is likely the
one I had before the May 17 update.
I am not familiar how to go about revert to that previous version. Could
you clue me in?

On older Android you choose the directory to be anywhere you want.
In the latest Android the directories are defined by scoped storage.
In all cases the APKs won't be there unless you checked the right boxes.

You download the .apk file to some folder and then tap on it.

If your device is set up to allow installation from .apk files, it
will just install the old version over the currently installed one
(alternatively you can first uninstall the currently installed one, but
that way you will lose any settings, data, etc.).

If your device is not set up to allow installation from .apk files, it
will tell you so and will probably tell you which setting you should
change. If not, look for a setting such as 'install from unknown
sources' or some such.

In my case - Samsung Android 11 - it is: Settings -> Apps ->
<three_vertical_dots> -> Special access -> Install unknown apps ->
tap on your file manager (in my case 'My Files') -> switch on 'Allow
from this source'.

For future use:

To save the APK of an installed app, you can use an APK extractor app.

I.e. you save the APK, *before* updating a 'suspect' app, so you can
roll-back without having to rely on sites such as apkpure.com (which may
not have what you lost).

I use:

'Apk Extractor'
<https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.marga.ApkDownloader>

As 'Dean Hoffman' hinted at - but did not provide specifics for -, you
can also automate this process, i.e. automatically saving APKs of
installed apps, before the apps get updated. I don't bother with this,
because I only update manually.

I have Android 9.

Thanks, to Dean as well. I think I remember now the procedure,
side-loading or some such name comes to mind. I'll try it as soon as I
have a little more time.

Well, I've just done it and the roll-back seems to have fixed the page
rendering problem. But I better knock on wood on this one.
Thanks again. I've learned a lot from you.
