I have subscribed to Archive for many a year.
Last year when Gavin Smith took over I sent my subscription to
him using his name as the payee.

This year I received with my last magazine with a slip saying that and I
quote...

"It is easy to resubscribe - plase turn over for payment methods."

Not so using UK bank transfer is a totally different account with an IBAN
number etc.

However trying to pay Gavin this way I hit a major problem in that my bank
requires the account name to fulfil their security protocol.

Gavin has NOT provided this name and having sent an email to

gavin at archivemag dot co dot uk

I have not had a reply.

Does anyone have an idea how to resolve this impasse?

I suppose I could send a cheque to the address given but in this day and
age why?

Hi John

When I make a payment using electronic banking my bank retains the
details, so I can reuse them as I do for Gavin (and for others). Are the
details from your last payment not still held?

I thought I set up the instruction with Gavin as Payee, but on checking I
find it says 'Abbey Press' and it has gone through the interbank
validation process, so you should be OK using that.

Not sure what you are saying about the IBAN and account number. The IBAN
for my personal account is a combination of numbers and letters (exact
configuration depends on country concerned), but the last 14 digits are my
sort code and account number.

The website that gives details of IBANs includes a calculator, so if you
need it you can use that (I just did an internet search for IBAN format or
some such).

best wishes

Not clear what you are trying to do? are you outside the uk? if outside
then IBAN is relevant, if you are paying UK bank to UK bank then all you
need are sort code, account number and account name . All the info is on
the web site for archive magazine, plus options for paypal and old
fashioned cheque.

Probably a bad idea, as the UK account details have changed at some point in
the last 12 months. It was originally an account in Gavin's name at Halifax;
it's now an account in his name at Starling Bank. As you'd expect, sort code
and account number are both different.

Gavin is the payee, and *not* Abbey Press -- which was retained by the Nagel
family as far as I know. There's a different publisher named on the back of
current issues, which I assume is Gavin's.

The website -- http://www.archivemag.co.uk/+prices.php -- says use "Gavin
Smith" as payee for the Starling Bank account mentioned above (which seems
odd, as cheques are payable to "Archive Magazine"). There are full details
of sort code and account number there, too (plus IBAN, PayPal and cheque).

Err be careful its now Northern Oak Publishing, - Abbey Press was the late
Jim Nagel's company.

But the bank account name should be as Gavin Smith @Starling Bank

per this link:
http://www.archivemag.co.uk/+prices.php

The account name is the same when using the IBAN account details "Gavin
Smith" But you do not need to use IBAN unless you are overseas, i.e.
outside the UK or channel islands

The details on the web site are correct. What was printed on the slip with
your last magazine may not be.

Gavin's account is, in effect, something like "Gavin Smith trading as Archive
Magazine" and while he can cash cheques payable to Archive Magazine, the bank
account name which you have to input for BACS payment is Gavin Smith.

A few weeks ago I couldn't make my bank accept it as Archive Magazine, so I
emailed Gavin and he told me what to put instead, and explained the
situation. He said he was updating the web site and so I assume it's now
correct.

Thank all who replied.
I was trying to use Archive magazine as the account name thinking the
change of bank was for business reasons as the original account seemed to
be Gavin's personal account.

True - but I wish we did use the IBAN, as IBANs include a
checksum which catches most of the mis-types one may make.

Many other countries, including Switzerland, switched to
only using the IBAN years ago.

This name checking business has been appallingly badly
implemented, made worse by the fact that there seems to be
no standard implementation.

I recently had the following nonsensical experience with
Nationwide:-

Bank: Please enter the name on the a/c:

Me: xxx xxx xxx (West Oxfordshire) xxx

Bank: Error! the following chracters may not be used in an
a/c name - ( )

Me: xxx xxx xxx /West Oxfordshire/ xxx (/ was on the
permitted list)

Bank: Error! The name almost matches. The actual name on the
a/c is xxx xxx xxx (West Oxfordshire) xxx. Do you want to
continue?

Followied by the usual dire warnings.

This sort of thing just brings the whole thing into
disrepute and encourages people to ignore the checks.

BUt, A charity, of which I am chairman, was making a significant donation
to another charity. the email was intercepted and the recipients account
details changed. This was 3 years ago, before all these checks. Luckily our
bank smelt a rat and didn't make the transfer.

Most banks give you no feedback at all. At least in the
story I gave I did get some feedback.

Had the system been in place at the time you describe, just
telling you that the names did not match does not really
help. If, though, you had got a message to say that the
account was, say, in the name of Mr F Bl***s, you could have
seen at once that there was a real problem. But if the
non-match had simply been a matter of punctuation, you would
probably have been prepared to go ahead?
