Now is the time on c.s.i.p.g.a to (clap) give away free game!
(congratulations, you're old if you catch that reference)

Today on GOG we get:

* Hammerting
https://www.gog.com/en/game/hammerting
Sort of a cross between "Dwarf Fortress",
"Minecraft" and "SimCity", this game has you
managing an underground dwarven settlement. It's
not quite as deep as any of those, but makes up
for it with a sense of humor. Unfortunately, it
was released in an unfinished state, and much of
its potential is unrealized, let down by poor UI
and QOL. Had the developers stuck with it, the
game might have been a classic; now it's just a
bunch of interesting ideas that you wish might
have been better implemented.

Still, it's not a TERRIBLE game, and it IS free, so that's two things
in its favor. You have GOG's usual 3-day time-limit to claim this one
before they start asking for money for it again.

3 things as it's on GOG, opposite of a strike out? A triple?

Anyway, I picked it up. Thanks Spalls. I might actually try it, though
I tried I couldn't get into Dwarf Fortress, so perhaps I won't.

I like the graphics style and I wanted to try something like Dwarf
Fortress. Unfortunately, reviews on Steam are mixed... precisely for
the reason you state here. The game was abandoned by the devs.

I passed since it didn't have good reviews. Even if I had it for free, I doubt I will play it!

Speaking of which, I really ought to give "Dwarf Fortress" another
try, especially with the updated graphics. The original's ASCII
visuals put me off too much for me to enjoy it the first time I tried
the game. But maybe the updated tile-graphics will allow me to see the
brilliance everybody attributes to the game.

Still... I'm not sure I want to pay $29 for the privilege. It may have
to wait until the next Steam sale...

I hate ASCII graphics and that turned me off as well. When I learned
about and saw the newer tile graphics, then I became interested. And
only then.

Sandbox games make me nervous, and with it being notoriously complex,
it's definitely not my kinda game.

I played DF for a while. It really is quite the deep game. The ASCII
graphics never put me quite as much off of it as the relentless
difficulty did.
Also despite the ASCII characters the game consumes a lot of resources
after a certain amount of creatures are in the game.

The "ASCII" version is still free. (I put ASCII in quotes because it
actually uses IBM code page 437, which includes a lot of characters not
in ASCII.) If you get a good square ratio font for it then its kind of
like you're playing with tiles. I got acustomed to it pretty easily,
but I've played a fair amount of Nethack and Angband. The developers
were actually pretty creative in how they use all the characters available
in CP 437.

As Kyonshi says though the problem with Dwarf Fortress is that after
you get the hang of the game, your biggest difficultly is that game's
performance scaling is terrible. Eventually your settlement will grow
too big, too complex with too many dwarves that the frame rate drops to
unplayable levels.
