I'm using the latest release 20.2 on an Athlon II X4 640 with Cinnamon.
My Graphics board is a Nvidia GF19 (GeForce GT 610) with
nvidia-340.108-0ubuntu5.20.04.2 closed driver (a newer one doesn't work,
too.
If a new kernel would installed about the updatemanager and I restart I
only get after a few seconds a black screen and I must reboot to grub
and start with the old one. Any hints?

Is it a dual booting machine?

You could boot the update in compatibility mode and then install the
(old) driver from nvidia:

https://www.nvidia.com/Download/driverResults.aspx/101818/en-us
Version: 364.19
Release Date: 2016.4.22
Operating System: Linux 64-bit
Language: English (US)
File Size: 83.89 MB
Supported products GeForce GT 610,

Or just use/try a boot parameter like nomodeset which isn't quite as
'drastic' as compatibility which does more than nomodeset.

I changed from quiet splash to nomodeset, updated grub and installed the
kernel 5.4.0.80 (last functionally is 5.4.0.70), all between, include
the 5.4.0.80 makes freeze the PC while booting. After set nomodeset the
last I see is the screen linked here:
https://miguel.de/screenshot.jpg
I also tried the 5.8 and 5.11, same result. The graphicdriver isn't a
problem for me, could be the old one, no matter, I just mentioned it
cause perhaps there are known problems between the graphiccard and/or
the driver with newer kernels you can tell me.
