Greetings and salutations, fellow humans. Free games time again. You
know the drill; head on over to Epic and click the 'add to library'
links. Remember, a cluttered video game library is a happy video game
library.

This week's clutter includes:

* Industria
https://store.epicgames.com/en-US/p/industria
Although the title might bring to mind a factory-
automation management sim game, "Industria" is in
fact a first-person shooter set in a sci-fi/alt-
universe cold-war setting where you rampage through
East Berlin shooting robots. It's a pretty and
atmospheric corridor shooter; not very long and it
probably could stand a bit more polish (balancing and
bugs are both frequent complaints by reviewers),
but overall it's a solid B-list title. I think I'll
give it a try.

* Lisa: The Definitive Edition
https://store.epicgames.com/en-US/p/lisa-the-joyful-219c24
A 'complete' edition that includes "Lisa: The First",
"Lisa: The Painful" and "Lisa: The Joyful", two Indie
RPGs with a side-scrolling retro-graphic'd viewpoint.
I don't know anything about the game and it generally
has good reviews... but on first glance, I can't say
this is a game I'd want to play. It just looks ugly,
not only because of its old-school graphics but
unappealing character and monster designs, and boring
map layout. I guess it has a sort of weird Lynchian
vibe that might appeal to some, but I'm not sure I'm
in the target demographic.

Is your library now appropriately cluttered? You have seven days to
add to the mess!

Not having played it yet, I get the impression of it being
'slav-jank'... even though (as far as I can tell) the developers -
Bleakmill Games - aren't from eastern Europe and so, definitionally,
the game can't be slav-jank. But it looks like one.

And - despite the connotations of the name - I don't really mean that
to be a negative description. Slavjank games, while lacking that final
layer of polish, often had excellent visuals and atmosphere that made
the games worth playing. They also often boasted novel settings and
situations. They were rough around the edges; unpolished diamonds that
you often had to work at to get any enjoyment out of them... but it
was usually worth the effort.

Origins aside, I don't know if "Industria" is slavjank... but I
wouldn't be entirely disappointed if it was.

My game libraries have been appropriately cluttered for some time now.
Thank you for helping me to clutter them even more.

As for these two games, The Lisa game interests me more but I
completely agree with you about the graphics.

So I picked it up, and was going to install it and give it a try but in
the Library it only lists

Lisa: The Painful - Definitive Edition
Lisa: The Joyful - Definitive Edition

I don't see "Lisa: The first"

When I search Lisa in the store it only shows "The Definitive Edition"
not either of those. I'm scratching my head on what to do here.

>how would you define slavjank?

Hmm... let's see. What is slavjank? I guess I would describe it as a
video game (usually FPS but not necessarily; RTS games and workplace
sims are also common) developed in Eastern Europe, particularly in
parts of the former Soviet Union (Russia, Ukraine). (Thus the 'Slav-'
prefix).

Visuals are usually above-average. The games tend to suffer from a
certain lack of polish (hence, the -jank* suffix). This can take a
variety of forms: it could be balancing issues, or weird difficulty
curves, or imprecise controls. There's often a number of translation
issues too. A lot of the games have bugs, often game-breaking. But
they also often are slightly ahead of the curve in experimenting with
new mechanics. Slavjank games tend to come from small to medium sized
publishers.

Slavjank games also - due to their origins - tend to have a dour and
pessimistic atmosphere. They often take place in vaguely Russian
locales, so expect lots of brutalist architecture. There is often
tongue-in-cheek humor but the overall impression you get is not of a
hopeful, happy world.

Slavjank games were a lot more common in the mid 2000s and early
2010s. Some examples include "You Are Empty", "Codename: Outbreak",
"Ubersoldier", "Creed", "Chrome" and even (arguably) "STALKER: Shadow
of Chernobyl". I've even seen "Cyberpunk 2020" included in the
category (mostly due to its very rough release; I think most of its
critics would agree it doesn't deserve that anymore).

Slavjank games filled an important niche; they were mid-tier titles.
Not having the huge budgets that Western games benefited from, they
still punched above their weight class, offering interesting (if
flawed) experiences. I mostly enjoyed them because they offered an
interesting contrast to the gung-ho, 'we alone can save the world'
viewpoints that was so common to mid 2000s FPS games. They often were
as much about just surviving, struggling not to sink any deeper, as
they were about achieving any overall quest. They were a nice change
of pace and I appreciated them for that.

So... is "Industria" slavjank? I honestly don't know. I have no idea
where its developers - Bleakmill Ltd. - are based. Not having played
the game (yet), I can't tell you much about the quality of the game,
and whether its buggy, poorly localised, or if its game mechanics are
well balanced. But it does have some nice looking visuals, it is set
in Eastern Berlin prior to the collapse of the Soviet Union, and it
certainly isn't created by an A-tier developer. That's why I said that
even though it may not, definitionally be a slavjank game, it (at
least superficially) reminds me of one.

Does "Industria" deserve the moniker? I honestly don't know. I don't
entirely see the "slavjank" categorization entirely as a negative
(it's more a warning not to set your expectations too high). But it
can also indicate that the game will not be the normal power-fantasy
western FPS. If "Industria" isn't slavjank? That's fine; I'll
appreciate not having to deal with its bugs or weird controls. And if
it is? That's cool too; I'll enjoy playing something different and
weird.

* derived from 'janky': (adjective) 'of poor quality', 'not
functioning properly or adequately', 'faulty' or 'junky'.

Apparently "Lisa: The First" is a free prologue. I based my info on
the "Lisa:Complete Edition" found on Steam, which does include "The
First". Apparently Epic's "definitive edition" does not. (there's no
'definitive edition' listed on Steam; I just assumed the two were the
same. Well, you know what they say about assuming...)

But if you want the full "Lisa" experience you can grab "Lisa: The
First" for free here:

I would throw the "Metro" games on that pile too, as well as
"Ghostrunner."

So I decided to try Lisa: The Painful as that's the first that was free.
It brought me through the prologue, I'm not sure if that was Lisa: the
First or not, but it felt like I didn't need anything more anyway.

The prologue is annoying though as it's basically an in game cutscene
which is fairly long for what it was. I suppose it's to build into the
main game and can be forgiven.

*mild spoilers of the premise of the game follow*...

The setting/text is dark and disturbing. Some sort of apocalypse (no
explanation) has left the world a wasteland, and there's no women.
Except one baby girl you find in the wasteland and raise to a child,
then she gets kidnapped and your friends killed. She appears to still
be a child at the time of the kidnapping. You go out to get her back.
Constant comments from raider type enemies on what they'll do if they
find her really turned me off.

As to the gameplay, it's JRPG combat and some rather crap side scrolling
when not in combat.

I won't be continuing it. The subject matter while compelling, isn't
something I'm interested in exploring, and the gameplay itself feels
like it would be some shovelware in the 80's at best.

I personally wouldn't, but what is and isn't slavjank is open to
interpretation, depending on where you draw the line for 'jank'.
Personally, I think that the Metro games - and the later STALKER games
for that matter - were well-made enough that they don't deserve that
designation, but I can understand that others may disagree.

Similarly, while I didn't /enjoy/ "Ghostrunner" I think that's more
because it's targeted at an entirely different audience than the one I
am in. I think it's trying to be a very specific type of game aimed at
a very specific type of audience, and - in my opinion - it achieved
its goals. It's a game for people who enjoy the challenges of
speedrunning; a game for people who get off on mastering the
mechanical and technical aspects of a perfectly timed run through a
level. That's not me, but just because I don't enjoy it doesn't make
the game janky. Just different.

(Also, as far as I know, the Ghostrunner devs are based in Denmark.
That would make their game Eurojank - or Danejank? - and not Slavjank.
Fortunately, the world is wide enough to support multiple types of
jankitude. ;-)

But YMMV. Jank is in the eye of the beholder. If it's jank to you, who
am I to argue? ;-)

I tried it. The short of it is, no - as much as I wished otherwise -
it is not a very good game. The long of it is coming in two days with
the monthly round-up (no peeking!).

Vaguely. I remember unexciting gameplay and pretty graphics. Assuming
its origins are from the appropriate geographic region, it would

There was also "Hard Truck: Apocalypse". That one is /definitely/
Slavjank (it's developers were Russian) and although it was
conceptually a very good idea, it wasn't much fun to actually play.
