A post in which I express an opinion of mine:

https://www.yahoo.com/entertainment/britney-spears-vacations-hawaii-boyfriend-183000674.html

According to my understanding, Britney Spears has spent much of her career standing up for people with mental health disabilities.

For example:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s25OMP4Ww6Y

So I am asking...

Why Isn't She Happy?

I'm glad that it sounds like you also support people who have engaged in big efforts to help mentally ill people.

I actually had never heard of her, at least not in a way that I had remembered...thanks for sharing that. I am very definitely bumping John F. Kennedy from my "favorite presidents" list based on this information. I guess FDR and Lincoln are all I have left for that list now...too bad Al Gore didn't win.

Yeah. Apparently the Kennedy's were ashamed of her, and thought she made
the family look bad. God damn it! Assholes. Btw, if you do not want to
click on the link to my cipher, the decrypted plaintext, that was
encrypted with the default key, is:

I made a typo in the plaintext, funny. ;^)

Fwiw, I have a special _hate_ to anybody who performs a lobotomy.
Imvvvho, they should give themselves a lobotomy first, just to test it
out, see how it feels... GRRRR....

Yeah, I don't think lobotomies are done that much anywhere, at least not in the US...but they are/were a very brutal way to hurt people and permanently disable them in a big way. That kind of thing is pretty close to Naziism, although of course lots of bad things get labeled as right-wing extremism without being quite that horrible.

They were a medical fashion. It's a remarkable fact that you can inflict major trauma on the frontal lobes without
killing the patient or impairing most lower-level functions. Unfortunately whilst medical doctors consider themselves
to pursue evidence-based medicine, the fact is that they are very susceptible to fads, often driven by the
political or social climate of the times.

It's easy to judge people in hindsight. At the time, most doctors were
trying to do what they could to help their patients based on very little
understanding of how the brain works physically, chemically and
biologically, and even less understanding of psychiatric illnesses.
What they saw, in many cases, was someone in distress, in pain, having
convulsions and seizures, failing to function in normal society, etc.
In previous times, the "treatment" was mostly to lock the person up,
perhaps in a padded cell, perhaps in a circus for entertaining others.
A variety of methods including lobotomy and electroshock therapy were
developed as a way of helping people when they knew of no better way.

It /was/ evidence-based medicine - though the evidence for and against
was very limited at the time. For some people, it helped. (And while
lobotomy is, AFAIK, no longer practised anywhere, electroshock therapy
is still in use in some situations.) For the majority of doctors, they
lobotomised people because they thought and hoped that it would help,
and that the benefits would outweigh the disadvantages and risks.

Of course there were some who merely followed a fad, or were
incompetent, or did it for profit, or to help "important" families hide
their "black sheep". On the whole, however, it was done with the best
of intentions, based on the limited knowledge, understanding and
experience of the time. As doctors learned more, it became clear that
the disadvantages rarely if ever outweighed the advantages, and the
practice stopped.

In modern mental health care, there are many drugs used that have
serious side-effects. Medicines that calm manic patients can turn them
into "emotional zombies". Drugs to stop epilepsy can make people
lethargic. These are much less bad - and less permanent - than older
treatments. But they are still far from good, and for the same reason -
doctors give the best treatment they know of, but science knows too
little about what would work better. It is all evidence-based as far as
possible, but without much evidence - there is just too much variation
between patients, too many long-term effects, and too many ethical
concerns to be able to get good evidence for treatments.

That's absurd.

On people that were very persistently very violent (many murderous
rampages) on the basis of mental illness this may have made some sense
until alternatives became available.

On everyone else it is very difficult to see how doctors could be so
ignorant to not see that this is just plain evil.

I figure, if somebody wants to perform a lobotomy, they should try it
