Hi ,every attempt at patching installed software fails with the same
type of error. It complains about somefile.noarch.rpm

This happens with zypper or yast

It is not the same file each time but it is always a noarch file.

2 OS patches have failed as has a bash update and a Libreoffice update.
The LibreOffice did work manually via yast when I added the LO 7.2 repo
manually.

I forced a total update via yast over the internet to see if that made
a difference but I saw the same problem . I wondered if there had been
updates to the software and that was the easiest way to check.

Here is a typical output from Yast

Did you read the release notes? They say not to try patches for a week
or two.

Disable the "Update repository with updates from SUSE Linux Enterprise 15" or
wait a bit, like a week? Seems there's problems.

I don't think disabling repos is a good idea now. Just wait till they
find out what is going on and tell what we have to do, or they manage to
solve the root cause. Just wait and be patient.

Apart from the update issue as discussed, things are working fine.

The Firefox version was seriously out of date and was vulnerable. So I
added the Mozilla repo manually and added the latest version via Yast
with no issues.

Just as a test I added the 7.2 Libreoffice repo as well and updated
Libreoffice ,again no issues.

So now I have a working version of leap 15.3 except for auto updates I
have installed things like bleachbit and luckybackup thunderbird the
usual way via yast no issues all working.

Once the auto updates are fixed I will be updating all my boxes to 15.3

NONONONO. It is not vulnerable. It is an ESR release.

Google "what's an ESR release":

Firefox Extended Support Release (ESR) is an official version of Firefox
developed for large organizations like universities and businesses that

Will there be an "Official" announcement? I noticed there are, for one of my
computers which is pretty much a simpleton, 46 packages with currently available
patches.

While this is all good for universities/businesses, I'm just a simple single
user. There have been occasions, dealing with LARGE businesses, where in order
to accomplish something I've had to use Chrome or work with them over the phone
to have them do something manually to process whatever and mail (like with a
postage stamp) me the results.

So the question is: What are the downsides for me to try and use the current
release of Firefox? There seem to be times when I need the new features.

Why don't you wait for 15.3 to be released before "customising" it like
that? There will be a Mozilla repository you can use if you want the
current Firefox rather than the ESR version.

For sure it will be commented on the mail lists. Someone will say
something, maybe please try now and comment, and people will try it and
comment on the results, and it will be known when it works. An official
announcement as such, dunno.

You are a single user, but as you are using Leap, you are using the
tools of an organization that seeks stability rather than new shiny
tools :-)

I have found sites that will not work with mozilla, no matter the
version. In those stupid cases, I use Chrome (not chromium). I have
never been tempted to use the latest firefox over the ESR.

And of course, I have also found sites that will not work over internet.
If they configure addresses that bounce mail or plain do not exist,
there is no browser that will work better with them.

And there are also sites with really ancient and deprecated designs and
software. Flash, anyone? :-)

Downsides? Remember that Leap derives from SLE and thus has a core with
old libraries. Sometimes new software releases are simply impossible to
compile for Leap, they want the newest libraries as well.

You may recall that the maintainer had a hard time getting Seamonkey to
build.

I have not looked at the relevant bugzilla entries for a while now but I
think he gave up with 15.2. Certainly there have been no new versions
recently in the Update repository. The problem there seems to have been
Rust - apparently new levels happily break old scripts so a new Rust
level under 15.2 was not an option.

There are these versions currently for 15.2:

1. openSUSE:Leap:15.2 + | 2.49.4
2. openSUSE:Leap:15.2:Update + | 2.53.5.1
3. openSUSE:Leap:15.2:Update + | 2.53.3
4. mozilla ? | 2.53.7.1

Leap 15.3 has 2.53.7.1 in the experimental mozilla repo.

Leap 15.3 comes without any Seamonkey, but - as you say - the Mozilla
Test repository has the current version.
rust is unchanged between Leap 15.2 and Leap 15.3, that probably
explains why Seamonkey did not make 15.3.
Just out of interest, what is the difference between "2" and "3" in your
list? I'm writing this on a system which matches "2".

If you fire up YaST2 online update (yast2 online_update), you should get
offered the update of Seamonkey, an clicking on the patch it should say
what that patch offers.

I don't know whithout looking it up. It could be some internal patch.

Yast2 Online Update normally works better if there are updates to
install, my 15.2 system is up to date.
Yast2 Software Management, Versions does show a
2.53.3-lp152.3.4.1-x86_64 alongside the
2.53.5.1-lp152.3.7.1-x86_64 I have installed, both are in the Main
Update Repository.
Very interesting, but stoopid. (that dates me!)

So far, I have read comments about this package or that package being
fixed. Apparently they have to fix involved packages one by one.

I did a full update/install on my desktop machine on Monday and it
"just worked ", with no update errors.

Its a vanilla intel i9 machine with a standard nvidia 4gig graphics card.

So now my laptop and my desktop are both running OS 15.3 happily, and
updates all work as you would expect with no issues.
