I have created a couple of direct dial widgets, very handy.

However the text under the widget always seems to include "(Call)"
after the name of the contact. This is very annoying as the result is
nearly always a string of text like "Chris (C...". I've looked in
various places but I can't see a way to customize the label, is there
really no way to do it?

Depends on your launcher. I use Nova Launcher and use long-press->Edit.

I agree with Joe Beanfish, and as I said before to this "Chris Green", if he
isn't using Nova Launcher, then he can't possibly know what he's missing.
<https://novalauncher.com/>

In my humblest of opinions, there is no better launcher on this planet.
<https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.teslacoilsw.launcher>

Certainly the Nova Launcher allows the user to change the name of any icon
I've ever tried to change the name of (e.g., even "YouTube" can be changed).

The _only_ thing Nova Launcher doesn't do that I ever needed it to do was
create an empty folder (although there's a workaround, but it's a PITA).
