I have a 165MB 1 minute mp4-a taken on a smartphone (also copied to Windows)
I need to send over SMS on a smartphone in probably 10 second intervals.

How would you break a 1 minute m4a into six ten second clips for SMS?

why not just upload it somewhere and send a link?

nospam used his or her keyboard to write :

Because what would work better for me is to find software that will break
any video into a few seconds (user settable) segments for SMS sending of
higher quality files than I could text otherwise.

If I text the whole video inside a text message it comes out terrible
because of the down sizing which is automatic in the text messenger app.

I'm hoping to text smaller higher quality segments to watch in chunks.

Windows says it's 20210715_204957.mp4 of 163 MB (171,216,896 bytes)
Length 1:19, framewidth 1920, frame height 1080, data rate 16863kbps

Gspot says it's 163 MB (167,200 KB / 171,213,311 bytes)
mp42: MP4 v2 [ISO 14496-14]
- isom: MP4 Base Media v1 [IS0 14496-12:2003]
Recommended Display Size: 1920 x 1080
Created: 2021 Jul 16 22:51:18
Modified: 2021 Jul 16 22:51:18
video avc1 H.264/MPEG-4 AVC
audio mp4a: MPEG-4 AAC LC 48000Hz 256 kb/s tot , stereo (2/0)

What I want is to know how to chunk it into automatic ten second segments.

any video editor will work to split it in as many pieces as you want.

however, it's a lot easier to upload it and send a link. you can set it
to private if needed. that also means the recipient can watch it in its
entirety and not in chunks.

I am looking for an automatic 10 second video splitter running on Android.
That's not multi posted since the freeware group is for Windows software.

If I wanted to upload my videos I would have asked how to do that.
If I wanted to edit and re-encode my videos I would have asked that too.
But I'm not.

I just want a quick short segment (10 second?) splitter running on Android.
Seems to me it would be useful to have handy when I'm nowhere near a PC.

I am asking about any good automatic video splitter running on Android.
Best would be you feed it a video & tell it how many seconds to chunk out.

That way a one minute video at 10 second chunks would give me six videos.
I do not want them re-encoded. Just split.

All on Android if possible since the videos start on Android.
If it's not on Android, then I'll do it on Windows but I'd rather not.

This thread is asking for an automatic Android x-second video splitter.
If you don't know of one, then there is no need to clutter the thread.

nospam used his or her keyboard to write :
> any video editor will work to split it in as many pieces as you want.

The text app is automatically downsizing but it's downsizing to about 50KB.

I'm looking for a quick and easy Android solution that will take any video
as input and it will output usable five or ten second chunks, where only one
five or ten second chunk will be sent in the text app to the recipients.

Just now I split the source mp4 video on Windows using this command.
https://unix.stackexchange.com/questions/1670/how-can-i-use-ffmpeg-to-split-mpeg-video-into-10-minute-chunks
ffmpeg -i source.mp4 -threads 3 -vcodec copy -f segment -segment_time 0:10 split_%02d.mp4
ffmpeg -i source.mp4 -threads 3 -vcodec copy -f segment -segment_time 0:05 split_%02d.mp4

After I did that and sent one ten second chunk on my Android text app, it
turned out splitting is not the problem after all since the text app is
still downsizing all video clips to < 50 KB even as I set the maximum image
size to 10MB (there was no setting in my text app for video size).

After that failed test, it seems I need something more sophisticated than I
originally thought in order to take a longer video and then send only one
five or ten second chunk over the text app to a recipient and still have
that five or ten second video clip be not so blurry as to be unviewable.

I need to split and downsize since it looks like about 50KB is my limit.
Best if I can do it all on Android.

If someone sent me a video in snippets a few seconds long, I doubt I'd
watch more than the first couple ...

You just must not have cute grandchildren who are not worth watching. :->
I'd watch five or ten second clips of my cute great grandchildren any day.

From my test runs yesterday I realized it's not just a chunker I need.
I also probably need to change the pixel length & width ratio.

That means now I'm looking for an Android app that automatically chops
videos into x-second (settable) chunks and then also re-encodes them to
whatever aspect ratio fits on a typical smartphone.

Is 360p the typical aspect ratio for a smartphone texted video?

In another post you stated that you wanted to resize the video after the
splits. Resizing a video will always trigger a re-encoding. You can
split losslessly but you can't resize losslessly.

Everyone who has kittens or babies must be sending short videos over text.
I'm just not all that good at it which is why I'm not sure what I need.

After my test yesterday I realized I must do a few things to each video.
All of which I would like to be automatic (after setting it up perhaps).

I need to clip any given video into five or ten second segments.
Then I need to encode it down to 240p or 360p (which ever works better).
And I may even want to drop the stereo down to mono.

Anyone who is sending video over text must be doing those same things.
I didn't want to change my default text app but this suggests ChompSMS.
https://android.stackexchange.com/questions/125889/how-to-resolve-video-too-large-error-message-with-mms-video-attachment

While I can (and will) test ChompSMS out, I was hoping someone was ahead of
me on sending cute videos to family & friends. I'm not trying to reduce the
whole video but just to reduce the cutest five or ten second segment.

The Chomp has a setting for MMS Carrier Send Limit with choices of
100KB, 200KB, 300KB, 600KB, 1MB, 2MB, 4MB, or "Carrier has no limit."

I'm on AT&T which seems to have a 1MB MMS size limit according to this
https://forums.att.com/conversations/data-messaging-features-internet-tethering/mms-size-limit/5defedf6bad5f2f606e97db8
https://www.reddit.com/r/tmobile/comments/2ktco0/is_there_an_mms_size_limit/

There may be a sending versus receiving carrier imposed MMS size limit also.
For example it could be 1MB sending for up to 10 recipients but it could be
larger, like 3MB receiving, based on the googling that I have done to date.

And there may be a maximum dimensional size also (like 3072x3072 pixels)
but that's likely only for images (but who knows if it applies to video).

Even so, I don't want to compress a 5 minute video when I only want to send
the cutest five or ten second clip so the software has to chunk out either
the entire video into short segment clips for me to choose from, or the
software has to trim to the cutest clip segment and then compress that.

I can't imagine this isn't already out there since it's a universal need.

This Windows program seems to have a setting for Android MMS video size
https://videoconverter.wondershare.com/compress/mms-video-size-limit.html

Unfortunately the name "uniconverter" on Android is a different type of app
but I found this app just now which might work to compress to 1MB on Android
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.video.compressor.size.reducer

I was hoping not to be the first person who has sent a video clip in their
text app where the need is to select & compress the cutest segment to send.

Are you sure about that video trimming & re-encoding in Android MMS apps?

Does any Android MMS app have settings to trim video to the first 5 seconds?
Do any Android MMS apps convert a 1080p video to 240p or 360p automatically?

Which Android messaging apps do that 5-second trimming & 240p re-encoding?

nospam used his or her keyboard to write :
> use a different messaging app, one that supports videos.

I don't know of any normal MMS messaging app which does what is needed.

Almost all MMS messaging apps will create an appropriate video to send as an
MMS and they'll all compress an already created video to the 1MB size limit
for AT&T but what if the video was already created and it's already 165MB in
size at 1080p?

What messaging app on Android do you know of that does these steps?
[1] split the original video into five-second segments (or ten seconds)
[2] manually choose the cutest video (which will be the one that is sent)
[3] re-encode the 1080p video to 240p (or 360p if that works better)
[4] maybe re-encode stereo to 56k mono audio (maybe 64k MP3 44100 audio)

All the MMS messaging apps will only do this last step as far as I know.
[5] attach to MMS app (which is set to shrink to less than 1MB in size)

Googling tells me AT&T has MMS limits of 1MB per message sending (to up to
10 recipients) and 3MB per message receiving, with another limit of pixel
ratio of 3072x3072 for images).
https://forums.att.com/conversations/data-messaging-features-internet-tethering/mms-size-limit/5defedf6bad5f2f606e97db8

Android ChompMMS has a setting for "MMS Carrier Send Limit" with choices of
100KB, 200KB, 300KB, 600KB, 1MB, 2MB, 4MB, or "Carrier has no limit."

Therefore the problem isn't only compression but the four step sequence of
trimming, selection, downsizing and compression given any original 165MB 1
minute 20 second 1080p source.mp4 video taken on the smartphone.

If the video was created by the MMS app it would fit all the parameters but
the 1080p one-minute video already exists so it has to be trimmed to size.

I'll try some of these tools that may do the splitting on Android.

https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.curvegraph.deocut
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.vdodev.videosplitter

I'll try some of these tools that may do the 1080p to 240p on Android.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=org.contentarcadeapps.videoeditor
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.sybu.imageresizer

https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.video.compressor.size.reducer
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.longervideos.app

Overall these are the tasks needed for the original 1080p one minute video.
[1] Split the original 1080p one-minute video into ten-second segments
[2] Re-encode the 1080p segments into 240p segments (or 360p maybe)
[3] Choose the cutest segment to send via the MMS app on the phone
[4] The MMS app will be set to compress to 1MB if it's still too large

I tried duplicating your task. I found that for Android it works best to
use 2 separate apps for those 2 separate tasks.

Note: For efficiency you should resize first, then split. Otherwise
you'll end up resizing multiple files instead of just one.

For resizing:
Video Compressor Panda: Resize & Compress Video (ads) https://t.ly/rBNU
I was able to resize a 4.6MB MKV video from 704x480 to 0.8MB at 240x164.
Easy to use. Allows preset or custom resizing. The output video looked
about as good as the original (on a phone screen).
Note: The app contains ads so I suggest using an ad-blocker or paying
the $9.99 to remove ads.

For splitting:
Video Splitter (no ads) https://t.ly/rWY1
Easy to use. Split by specifying the length per split. You cannot split
by using the slider to specify the number of splits wanted. Instead
you'll need to divide the full video length (in seconds) by the number
of splits desired in order to determine the #seconds per split. Stores
output files only in the Movies directory.

I think you are solving the problem in the wrong way if you need to divide
the video into chunks. How will end users join the chunks back into the
complete video.

Why do you need to send it over SMS? That has even more severe size
restrictions than sending it by email. Is there some fundamental reason why
you can't do what is the standard solution: upload the entire video (maybe
with reduced resolution and/or bit rate compared with what the phone camera
recorded) to a web server and post a link to it. Sendspace or Postimages can
do videos as well as still pictures IIRC.

But don't contemplate dividing it into tiny chunks simply so you can send
them over the "wrong" transmission mechanism.

For splitting:
Video Splitter (no ads) does not support m4a files. https://t.ly/rWY1

Video Splitter (Ad Free) by Swap Apps - https://t.ly/yXkF
Supports m4a files. Easy to use. Split by specifying the length per
split. You cannot split by specifying the number of splits wanted.
Supports audio files.

No, we're just aware that they're not nearly as remotely interesting to
anyone else as they are to us, so we don't usually bother.

Probably not. I don't know how costs go where you are, but in the UK,
a "video over text" would be an MMS (Multimedia Message Service) message
and would cost a small fortune to send.

Most people use something like Telegram or WhatsApp, which are free in
monetary terms, and there are more apps to choose from, but not all of
them are free from other things like ads or monitoring.

I use Telegram when I can.

Irrelevant.

With a proper (thus non mms) messaging app you just send the full video
if you wish, or a section of it.

We are telling you NOT to use MMS messaging apps.

Use messaging apps that can send videos with no limitations, and for
free everywhere.

Every phone has MMS (and all my recipients have free unlimited MMS).

While everyone in the USA has MMS on their phone, and everyone I'm dealing
with has free unlimited MMS, I found out most people do NOT directly
"attach" camera video to MMS using the paperclip button in the MMS app.

Instead, they have the MMS app bring up its camera to take the video.
In every case I tested, the MMS app camera video was very small in size.
The 10-second MMS video was 45KB in size (but it was still kind of blurry).

I looked at one of the videos taken by the MMS app using "media info"
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=org.mediainfo.android.app
https://github.com/OLEG4120/MediaInfoLib-android
which said the MMS-video was MPEG4 3GPP Media Release 4, 419KB for 9 seconds
at 406kb/s audio, video format AVC, 390kb/s video, 960pixels by 720pixels,
variable frame rate, 30 frames per second, AMR audio constant bit rate
12.8kb/s, 1 channel, etc.

While I was surprised it was 720p, the only problem with taking the video
using the MMS app is you must plan ahead which isn't my situation.

I already have the 1080p one minute long 165MB camera video.
You'd think I could shrink it down to the specs of that MMS-taken video.

However, I can't yet get the MMS app to send a 1MB video even as that's the
limit the carrier puts on each MMS message. The MMS app keeps shrinking the
video down to 25KB to 50KB in size, which makes the results unusable.

This will snip the long video into 10 second segments.
ffmpeg -i input.mp4 -threads 3 -vcodec copy -f segment -segment_time 0:10 output_%02d.mp4

But this is even better because I can pick the 10-second segments
and it changes the 1080p video aspect ratio to a smaller ratio.
ffmpeg -ss 40 -t 10 -i input.mp4 -map_metadata -1 -vf scale="iw/4:-1",fps=10 -vcodec libx265 -crf 35 -ar 12000 output.mp4

I compared those results using GSpot freeware on Windows
http://www.headbands.com/gspot/
317 KB (325,146 bytes)
video codec hev1 480 x 270
audio codec mp4a: MPEG-4 AAC LC 12000Hz 128 kb/s tot , stereo (2/0)
isom: MP4 Base Media v1 [IS0 14496-12:2003]
- iso2: MP4 Base Media v2 [ISO 14496-12:2005]
- mp41: MP4 v1 [ISO 14496-1:ch13]
Recommended Display Size: 480 x 270

These results seem on par with that of the MMS taken video.
But when I sent it via the MMS app it was further shrunk to 22KB in size!

Now that I have the video down to less than 1MB in size, I need to figure
out how to tell the MMS app to not further shrink it in size.

Thank you for that very easy to use video splitter app for Android.

I installed that video splitter app & opened the minute long 165MB MP4
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=io.github.videosplitterapp

It defaulted to the following settings
video quality = very low (there were six different settings)
audio quality = very low (it too had six different settings)
library = /storage/emulated/0/Movies/Video Splitter

There was a default button for 30 second slices, another for custom timed
slices, and a single slice using a given start & end time, and manual splits
where I could add any number of breaks along the video timeline.

For my first test I did the 10 second custom time splits where the slider
was very easy to set and then the "Split Now" button visible & easy to find.

While it crunched away, it showed the progress in a very intuitive way,
section by section, percent by percent, until they were all finished.

It took a lot longer than did FFMPEG on Windows but that's to be expected.
ffmpeg -i in.mp4 -threads 3 -vcodec copy -f segment -segment_time 0:10 out_%02d.mp4

It created a directory named "Custom time splits" in the "Movies" folder.
File sizes were about 10MB for 10-second segments (comparable with FFMPEG).

It's nice, and I like it better than copying over to Windows to use FFMPEG.

> For splitting:
> Video Splitter (no ads) does not support m4a files. https://t.ly/rWY1

I tried this suggestion after the one above (because of M4a files).
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=kallossoft.videosplitter

What was different was it allowed me to select more than one vide (which I
didn't need, but which is a nice touch).

Then there was a slider to split every "x" number of seconds, as it played
the video automatically (which was also a nice touch).

I set the slider to 10 seconds and hit the easy to find green button.
It asked if I wanted to run in background, and it popped up an ad when I did
(which I didn't expect). It then took forever to run and I had to finally
kill it. I couldn't find where it put the results.

What's nice about this app is that it's so simple but I think I like that
other one better. At least it didn't pop up an ad. :->

At this point, I can say that I've learned a lot but I'm not there yet.

After I split, I still need to make the 10 second video smaller than 1MB.
And then I have to make sure the MMS app won't compress that even further.
