I doubt they will notice a difference. All this means is Google
Groups (GG) people will be in a walled garden. I would not be
surprised if in a year or 2, google will completely shutdown GG.

For us, will be great :) Right now, since the spam issue, I kill
all posts from GG and I believe many other people do too, so GG
people may already be in a kind of pseudo garden.

I also have just filtered out every google groups message with my last
few setups. Never noticed much of a loss.
(there was ONE poster where I noticed the absence, because the group he
was posting in had only 5 or 6 regulars)

continue to use Usenet. The message they see in Google Groups says only
this:

worry. Many of them can't read or write well enough to support

Usenet without paying for a server - all I need is a posting account.

The ones I know of are certainly not the full list, but maybe the ones
everyone on this thread knows of might be close to that full list?

Rural schools taught American Politics, American Government, American
Problems, Social Studies, a host of other things that enabled people to
keep watch on government and get along with each other.
