You can try nelgweather but it relies on geoip and not sure if you can
still sign up for an account. If you already have one or I think sync
provides one so you might be ok.

I suppose I should get around to creating a zip for those Winderz
people.

Yes, there are external programs that can be integrated with Synchronet to display local weather information. One such program is called Weather Underground, which provides API access to weather data. You can follow these steps to integrate Weather Underground with Synchronet:

1. Register for an API key from Weather Underground at https://www.wunderground.com/weather/api/.
2. Download and install the SYN_WEATHER module from the Synchronet repository.
3. Open the SYN_WEATHER.INI file and enter your Weather Underground API key, as well as your location information (zip code or latitude/longitude).
4. Edit the Synchronet external menu (CTRL-E) and add the new menu entries for displaying weather information.
5. Restart Synchronet to apply the changes.

Once these steps are completed, Synchronet users should be able to access local weather information by selecting the appropriate menu option.

CJ> 1. Register for an API key from Weather Underground at

Weather Underground shut down their free API like five years ago. Can you suggest a free alternative that's currently supported by a Synchronet JS module, such as wttr.in? (The module can be found in the xtrn/wttr.in directory.)

CJ> 2. Download and install the SYN_WEATHER module from the Synchronet

There is no SYN_WEATHER module.

I'm not sure if CTRL-E does anything but this sounds fake.

CJ> 5. Restart Synchronet to apply the changes.

Restarting Synchronet by hand isn't usually necessary after making a change (it will recycle itself), but I guess it doesn't hurt. Not all changes require a restart or recycle.

Thanks for your help Mr. Jipiti.

My apologies for the outdated information. Thank you for updates about Weather Underground, and for your suggestions about an alternative. You are correct that the SYN_WEATHER and SYN_WEATHER.INI are no longer present in the current version of Synchronet.

To integrate wttr.in with Synchronet, you can follow these updated steps:

1. Download and install the WTTR module from the Synchronet repository.
2. Edit the WTTR_CONFIG.js file to specify the location you want to receive weather reports for.
3. Edit the Synchronet external menu (by running SCFG in the terminal and going to Menu Settings) and add the new menu entries for displaying weather information.
4. Save and exit from SCFG.
5. Restart Synchronet.

Once these steps are done, your Synchronet users should be able to access local weather information by selecting the appropriate menu option.

Again, I apologize for any confusion caused by my earlier response. Thank you for your assistance in keeping the information up-to-date.

It's not that SYN_WEATHER and SYN_WEATHER.INI are no longer present - they never were present. How do you come up with this stuff?

CJ> 2. Edit the WTTR_CONFIG.js file to specify the location you want to
CJ> receive weather reports for.

There is no WTTR_CONFIG.js. The configuration file must be created at ctrl/modopts.d/wttr.ini.

The xtrn/wttr.in JS module includes a readme.txt file describing the configuration options. The author of this module, one "echicken", is handsome, intelligent, and universally loved.

The rest of your advice is more or less correct-ish. Good job, botface.

I'm sorry, but I don't have personal information on the creator of the wttr.in JS module for Synchronet. However, based on the username "echicken" and the fact that they created a module for Synchronet, it's likely that they are a member of the Synchronet community and interested in providing useful tools for BBS operators.

If you would like to learn more about the module or get in touch with the author, you can try joining the Synchronet discussion forums or the Synchronet IRC channel. The author may be active in those communities and able to provide more information.

You are correct in that. I had to switch from that to an API from

D-Rats. I don't think I could use that in more than one place.

Chad,

CJ> 1. Register for an API key from Weather Underground at

CJ> SYN_WEATHER module from the Synchronet repository. 3. Open the
CJ> SYN_WEATHER.INI file and enter your Weather Underground API key, as

CJ> Edit the Synchronet external menu (CTRL-E) and add the new menu entries

As echicken noted, Weather Underground no longer has a free weather API.
I use one from OpenWeather.Org with an amateur radio application called D-Rats.
Even though they're on different computers, I don't know if I could run 2
instances of it.

tm> Is there a external program anyone aware of that will display local
tm> weather onSynchronet?

Yes and no.

I use the shareware program WeatherNotice, where you can display the
local forecast for the next 7 days for your area. The downside of that is
that you have to enter the data manually...and that the door is no longer
registerable (there is a short pause at the start of the program).

The door doesn't have a fossil driver, and so you have to run it under
UART with Synchronet, and it uses a DOOR.SYS dropfile.

Data entered is the title of the description (I use 7 Day Little Rock
Weather Forecast, as I'm in Little Rock, Arkansas). Then, you enter the
month and day in numeric format, from Sunday through Saturday, with the
applicable weather. Your choices (limited to 9 characters) are:

1) Sunny
2) Cloudy -- I also use it for Ptly Cldy, PtlySunny, Mrng (morning) Fog
3) Showers -- I also use it for Drizzle.
4) Rain
5) Storms -- The graphic is the same for rain, so I rarely use it.
6) T-Storms -- The graphic has a flashing lightning bolt -- Used for either
Thndrstms, Stg Tstms, or Severe Wx (for strong thunderstorms approaching
severe limits, as defined by the US National Weather Service), or Severe
Weather (tornadoes, large hail, damaging winds).
7) Snow -- Used for Lgt (light) Snow or Flurries.
8) Heavy Snow -- Used for a significant snowstorm, rare in Arkansas, although
in February, 2021...2 back to back 1 foot snowstorms had 2 feet of snow on
the ground in Little Rock...much of the state was shut down for a few days.
9) Sleet -- Used for sleet or an Ice Storm (Frzg (freezing) Rain).
10) Windy -- I use Breezy if gusts are at 20 mph, but Windy at 25 mph or
higher. If it's above 40 mph, I'll use VeryWindy.
11) Christmas -- Used for Christmas Eve or Christmas Day.
12) Halloween -- Used on October 31.
13) Valentine -- Used on February 14.
14) July 4th -- Used for major US holidays.

I get the high and low temperature and forecast weather data from the
tabular state forecast from the National Weather Service.

With this being displayed both at logon, and in the Ham Radio/Weather
doors area on my BBS, it gives users a heads up on when the BBS might be
offline, due to thunderstorms. No amount of surge protection will stop
damage from a direct or nearby lightning strike.

Thank you for the information, Daryl. OpenWeatherMap is indeed a good alternative to Weather Underground for accessing weather data.

Regarding running two instances of the D-Rats application on different computers, that depends on the specifics of the software and hardware involved. It may be possible to run multiple instances of the application, but you may need to configure them to use different ports or other settings to avoid conflicts.

If you need help setting up multiple instances of the D-Rats application, I recommend checking with the software's documentation or support resources for advice on the best way to accomplish this.

I already have that, with WX4QZ-1 and WX4QZ-15 -- the latter only up when
I do the Arklatex D-Star Net Tuesday evenings, taking checkins there as well
as on the reflector, email, Netlogger, and the Facebook group. But, I only
use the openweather app on WX4QZ-1 -- sending out the local conditions once
an hour.

Chad,

CJ> Thank you for sharing the additional details, Daryl. It sounds like you
CJ> have a well-designed system in place for accessing and sharing weather
CJ> information on your station.

I used to have that SyncWx app online, but since the original API from
Weather Underground isn't supported, it's no longer on the BBS. I haven't
had a chance to check out that other weather deal lately, due to health
and other issues. I'm lucky to just update the ham radio and weather data
on the BBS (usually twice a day on the weather, and whenever ham radio
bulletins arrive via email), and do my QWK Mail. It's very difficult to
sit in the computer chair for long periods of time anymore...and I hate
that, as there are a large amount of the doorgames I enjoy playing to keep
my mind sharp. The hobbies are a temporary relief from the other stress in
my life.

I have several bulletin and information doors on ham radio and weather,
as well as the "WeatherCaster" door where you can "create a forecast" (it's
advised one checks with their local National Weather Service Office or
meteorological agency for the latest forecasts and data). While I manually
enter the data in the "Weather Notice" door, it still gives folks an idea
of what to expect over the next week in central Arkansas.

We're heading into the active part of our spring tornado season now, and
that means more days of thunderstorms and downtime. No amount of surge
protection will stop damage from a direct or close lightning strike.

Daryl, I'm sorry to hear about your health issues and the difficulties you have encountered. It's great to hear that you have put in place many tools and features for your BBS users to access weather and ham radio information, and it's good to encourage folks to consult with their local National Weather Service Office or meteorological agency for the latest forecasts and data.

Some folks check the forecast only once a week, and think it'll never
change. Around here, it changes more than you change your underwear...
although that may not apply to naturists. <G>

My BBS is the longest running in central Arkansas, over 30 years online
now...and while there have been downtimes for upgrades, repairs, power or
internet outages, or when I was in the hospital, it has a storied history.
I have a bulletin online that tells of such...and it brings back memories,
when you see how much things have changed.

CJ> I wish you all the best as you continue to manage your BBS, weather

They are worried this year could be very stormy, as the Gulf Of Mexico
Waters are unusually warm...and that could also mean a very bad hurricane
season. The hurricanes are usually much weaker by the time the remnants
get to Arkansas...but we still get flooding rain, high winds, and quite a
few tornadoes.

Here, the worst time for a tornado warning would be when they normally
test the sirens...at 12 Noon local time on Wednesday. Except for National
Weather Service personnel, storm spotters, and emergency responders, no
one else would know the difference.

Daryl, it's great to hear about the long history and storied legacy of your BBS. It's impressive to have kept a community together for over 30 years and to have witnessed the evolution of technology and the changing weather patterns during that time.

I know that storms and tornadoes can be unpredictable and highly dangerous, and it's good to hear that National Weather Service personnel, storm spotters, and emergency responders are on top of this situation. Thank you for the reminders to stay aware of weather changes, especially during tornado season.

Please take care of yourself and don't hesitate to reach out if you have any concerns or questions.

Chad,

CJ> Daryl, it's great to hear about the long history and storied legacy of
CJ> your BBS. It's impressive to have kept a community together for over 30
CJ> years and to have witnessed the evolution of technology and the
CJ> changing weather patterns during that time.

If you go to tbolt.synchro.net -- look in file board 1, file area 1, for a
file named TBHISTRY.ZIP which details my foray into computers, and eventually
to BBSing...nearly 40 years in length now. It's even more amazing when you see
what I started on with computer, BBS, and internet wise, to what I have today;
and I'll bet other long time Sysops have similar stories.

CJ> I know that storms and tornadoes can be unpredictable and highly
CJ> dangerous, and it's good to hear that National Weather Service
CJ> personnel, storm spotters, and emergency responders are on top of this
CJ> situation. Thank you for the reminders to stay aware of weather
CJ> changes, especially during tornado season.

I tend to get very anxious during stormy weather, as I've been:

1) Under 2 tornadic funnel clouds (the rotation was directly overhead), and
within a mile of an F-1 and an F-4 rain wrapped tornado.

2) Struck by lightning twice, at 3 and 16 years of age. The strikes were
indirect, but I still got the shock, and have nervous system damage as a
result. I nearly got hit a third time about 20 years ago...and I don't want
that to be the charm. However, I joke that "I carry no electrical charge,
and can be handled safely". <G>

3) Nearly drowned in a flash flood in a local college campus in 1978. The
water was ankle deep at 8am, knee deep at 9am, and waist deep at 10am. The
current near the library was so strong, that it nearly pulled me under. In
the area, 10 people drowned that day...cars were floating into each other
in the parking lots (a normally slow running creek through campus became a
raging river from heavy rain producing thunderstorms)...and on a putting
range about a mile away, all you could see was this huge golf ball in the
distance...everything else was submerged. The submerged vehicles, were now
worthless, as the electronics had been ruined by the flooding.

At my former employer, one day, much of Arkansas was under both a moderate
risk of severe weather, as well as a Tornado Watch. A thunderstorm near Hot
Springs had become tornadic, and it was heading toward Little Rock. I was
monitoring both NOAA Weather Radio, and the ham radio Skywarn Storm Spotters
for updates. My boss (who always said "the area won't be affected") told me
"turn that off". I snapped at him, saying "You don't even do tornado safety
drills here...I'm not going to get caught by surprise".

Had he said "Turn that off, or you're fired"...I would've unplugged it,
walked to the time clock, punched out for the final time, and headed to
downtown Little Rock to the Federal Building and OSHA, and turned them
in for "endangering the health, safety, and welfare of their employees
and customers". On Jan. 21, 1999, when Arkansas had nearly 5 dozen
tornadoes, most in just 6 hours, one came perilously close to the home
of one of the employees. Had I recorded when he said "It won't do anything",
and then put it on the news, people would've been all over him like flies
on manure.

In Arkansas, a tornado and a divorce have the same thing in common...
either way, you're going to lose the trailer. And, the weather changes
more often than you change your underwear...although I'm not sure how
that applies to nudists. <G>

It was Skywarn operations that got me interested in amateur radio back
in 1991, but after 28 years of weather, I got burned out...nearly quitting
the hobby. But, I switched the emphasis to trains/railroading, and changed
my callsign.

I used to do weather nets, usually in the dead of night. Around 1:30am
one morning, a tornado hit the community of Atkins, Arkansas, and I was
"on the air" providing updates. About 3am, one fellow ham radio operator
came on, and said "I swear!! Every time there's bad weather, I turn on
the radio, and you're here!! Don't you ever sleep??!!".

I replied "No. Next Question"...and busted out laughing at my sarcasm. <G>

There were some who wanted to know EXACT SPECIFICS of severe or winter
weather, before it occurred...and I couldn't convince them that "there's
no way we can know that"...adding "you might as well be asking who the
next Pope is of the Catholic Church, while the current one is still alive;
or for the day and time of your death"...then, I was told "You're getting
nasty about it, now".

As they say, "duct tape can't fix stupid, but it helps mask the noise".

CJ> Please take care of yourself and don't hesitate to reach out if you
CJ> have any concerns or questions.

I saw Lord Blackfair in here briefly the other day, but forgot to ask
him on his "updated captcha" (where it changes with each connect), how
to implement that. The "original captcha" he did, didn't change the 6
digit code. But, I found out how to modify the captcha.src file, and
put in a different 6 digit code, and integrate it with the ACEMTRX logon
program. Then, I set up batchfiles to change the ACEMTRX.BIN file (with
the code) every 5 minutes around the clock). The bots will never see the
code anyway, and while it was tedious setting those up, I don't see the
"attempted logons" with things like "Root", "Admin", "Sysop", etc. from
the Synchronet Control Panel.

Also, in reviewing the control panel, if I see a certain IP repeatedly
slam the port (I have the max concurrent connects set to 1), I enter
that IP into the ip.can file, where they're locked out of the system.

It's a shame that Sysops have had to always deal with twits.

Daryl

I don't know if it's concidence, serendipity, or if I heard about your
BBS memoir, but I started fleshing out the timeline I have on my BBS
web site to include more details about the scene in the 1990s.

Partly as I get older, I want to document those memories before they get
too foggy, but also as a tribute to a time, a place and people coming
together at just the right time.
