The "Scottish Chaucer"?

Best known for the "long historical verse romance, *The Brus* -- the
story of the hero Robert Bruce and his champion, James Douglas, and
their role in the first war of Scottish independence." (Crystal)

About stories:
The fyrst plesance is the carpyng, [telling]
And the tothir the suthfastnes, [truthfulness]
That schawys the thing rycht as it wes.

This is now called "Early Scots", though the people who wrote in it just
called it "Inglis", and it is very similar to Northumbrian Middle
English. By the 16th century it is diverging more from the southern
dialects, and comes to be called "Scottis" by its users ("Middle Scots"
by modern scholars).
