Win7 Pro. Today I turned it on and there is no sound volume control.
Can't find it and wonder how to get it back. Any help appreciated.

At a guess, some dependency didn't start.

Sample flavor of such, here.

https://superuser.com/questions/989645/what-services-are-required-for-having-audio-in-windows-7

One problem with the dependencies list for the
services, is one item is missing from the
Audio dependencies. And I can never remember what
that one is.

Obviously, it's never RPC, because the OS would
tip over if RPC wasn't running. RPC is just as
important to the OS, as CSRSS security-related process.
RPC is also used for local procedure calls, which
is why it cannot be switched off.

Sound volume control on my Windows 7 Ultimate PC is by SndVol.exe, which
is at [C:\Windows\SysWOW64\SndVol.exe]. Copy it and paste as shortcut
to your Start menu.

Look at the tray icon for audio. Does is show as a normal icon, or as a
muted icon (with a slash through the icon)? Double-click on the audio
tray icon, or run sndvol.exe as suggested by Ross, and check the master
volume level is not at zero and not muted. While playing some audio
source (e.g., music or video with sound), slide the volume up and down
to see if you can hear audio.

Double-click on the audio tray icon, or run mmsys.cpl to bring up the
Sound control dialog. Under the Playback tab, are your speakers
selected as the playback device? There will be a small green checkmark
overlay icon for the selected audio output device.

Are you using powered external speakers? If so, what cables go to your
computer (how is it plugged in)?

Have you checked the speakers are getting power? Powered external
speakers usually have an LED to indicate they have power (provided their
On/Off switch is in the On position). I've see users kick out the power
cord from the outlet or UPS for the powered speakers. They also usually
have their own volume control. Have you turned their volume control to
midway? They may even have their own Mute button. Make sure it isn't
enabled.

Unplug the speakers from the computer's backpanel, and plug in a set of
headphones that you know work (test them on your stereo or other audio
device). That will test an audio signal is getting to the backpanel
connector. Oh, and make sure no headphones or any other jack is plugged
into a front panel audio port, if so equipped, since that usually cuts
or mutes the backpanel port.

Which first suggestion? Ross's to run sndvol.exe (and look at the
volume/mute settings)? Or mine to look at the audio tray icon to see if
it has a slash to indicate muting?

We MUST know! It helps us help others in the future to know what works.

Just out of curiosity: when I viewed that post (from Merle), it appeared
with the URL twice, but with the "ht" of the second one on the end of
the first line; if I hovered over it or copied the link, it showed as a
single link, with the string twice (i. e. with "bh" in the middle). As I
see it now as I'm composing this post, I see it as two lines each with a
">" at the beginning, the first ending "webh" and the second starting
"ttps:". How my (this) post will appear when it comes back, I await with
interest (-:!

I think that's what he has not got: not no sound, but no icon.

[excellent advice for "no sound" snipped.]

I've had that - sound working fine, but no tray icon; from what I
remember, it's not an uncommon problem. The solution is simple - there's
a "show tray icon" or similar setting (a tickbox) somewhere - but
_finding_ _where_ it is is fun! (I've tried, and can't find it. I
remember it isn't in an obvious place!)

He rebooted, it came back.

Probably a race condition, where a delayed start service started
too late, for sndvol to detect it, so sndvol exited.

Ah, I didn't see KenW's post, because he wants no one to see his posts.
He uses the "X-No-Archive: Yes" header. That means he wants his posts
deleted. At Google, I think the pending request to delete takes a week.
That's Google's expiration on posts using that header. The expiration
is up to whomever is running the archive. The poster doesn't get to
specify the expiration. So, my expiration on posters that are
attempting to punch holes in threads by having their posts disappear is
zero: immediate delete. He can request his post get removed. He
doesn't get to specify when.

In addition, using the header is inane. It is only honored by Google.
Archive sites (e.g., Howard Knight) and web-based forums using an
NNTP-to-HTTP gateway to bring Usenet into their forums couldn't give a
gnat's fart about the header. The attempt to expire and delete a post
using that header is futile, because other sites will archive the
article, and only children use it.

Hey, it's KenW that believes his articles have no lasting value, so he
tries to get them expired. He just doesn't get to control when they
expire.

What are you talking about ? In all the years using Forte Agent NO ONE
has ever complained about my posts getting deleted.

Simply re-booting the computer. My 81 y/o brain sometimes needs
re-booting as well. I had tried looking in all the obscure places for
a switch or something. I very seldom re-boot, just close the lid at
night and let it sleep.

It is such a common troubleshooting step that techs have been chanting
the reboot mantra for decades with every version of Windows. Guess I
assumed you already did that. You said you "turned it on" which sounds
like you did a cold boot, not restore from [hybrid] hibernation.
Resuming from hibernation won't get rid of existing hiccups, because you
reload the same memory image that you had before when the problem was
exhibited.

Good to hear something worked to fix the problem.

Don't worry about it. VanguardLH simply has his newsreader misconfigured,
