Anybody know what's happening with Impression ?

There seemed to be activity for a while, but it looks like it' s been a
few years now since the last update.

The website listed on plingstore:
www.impression-x.co.uk

seems to just be a holding page

I believe ImpressionX is now owned by ROD so asking Andrew Rawnsley or
Richard Brown might get an answer. I believe the holding page reflects the
exit of the recent maintainer.

I have it on good authority that there's unlikely to be any updates in
the short term.

Notwithstanding that, Impression remains my desktop publisher of choice.

There has never been anything on the Impression-X site to the best of my
knowledge, so I wouldn't read too much into its absence.

Ah ok.

Thanks. I can use my older version on Virtual Risc PC anyway, so maybe
I'll just stick with that.

There seems to still be quite a lot of '32 bitting' still to do on it

I can also run the older version on My RO5 machine with aemulor.

I would be happier parting with £60 for 'X' if things were still being
developed and could see some sort of progress.

Having said that I appreciate it's not an easy job to sort and I know
there's only so much development time to go around so to speak.

It's great that so much stuff is still being progressed in our RISC OS
world anyway.

I don't really use Impression much anyway, was just curious as to how
things were going

Thanks all

I've used Impression since it first came out.

The problem with ImpressionX is that if I use a name with more than
12 characters, it crashes my computer and I have to use Alt/Break to
cancel ImpressionX. I can get round it by using !Publisher, but it is
a pain.

Richard Keefe said (in 2020) he had found out why, and it would be
corrected in the next version. But we haven't had the next version.

I don't use it much either (X), the last time I used it was to produce the
manual for !Openvector. However, I think it is unlikely to progress any
further without funding, so I was happy to contribute.

I've just saved a document with a 14-character name and it was fine.
Using ImpressionX v.5.799 Dev on RISC OS 5.29.

Interesting discussion...

SWMBO uses Imp Publisher (5.13), and has done for many, many years and
continues to do so.
She's actually using it right now on her machine as I write this. :-)

I wondered if there are any images available for her to look at of the UI
of ImpressionX ?

Are there?

Thanks
Dave

I also used to use Imp Publisher a lot back in the days for business
paperwork, but when OvPro arrived, I manually converted(1) all my
Impression paperwork/templates into Ov Pro and I've not used Publisher
since, except to view the occasional old document.

Dave

Nb.1 This was back in the days before OvPro could auto load Impression
files.

The interface is just the same as earlier versions of Impression apart
from an icon on the toolbar for easy access to editing and creating new
colours. There's also a new option in the print dialogue for typesetting
options.
In essence it's just like Publisher Plus.

As I understand it there were no visiblechanges to the user interface of
ImpressionX - the work being done was all under the bonnet, as it were.

Thanks Harriet, I'll pass that on to her.
