hi,

On my linux mint 20.2 cinnamon, i installed the kernel 5.13.

For all version of kernel >5.10, i have an error during installation :

there is a problem with the version of libc6 (it should be >=2.33 for
dpkg linux-headers, but on my system there is 2.31 (ubuntu 9.3)).

When i do an update, I have this :

It seem to be the reason of my problems with virtualbox in which i can't
open any virtual machine.

When I do an apt install --fix-broken, the package is uninstalled but
virtualbox doesn't work.

When I try to install libc6 i have this :

What can I do ?

Thanks for advance.

My Mint Cinn 20.2 kernel is 5.4.0-58-generic x86_64 and its repo libc6
is 2.31-0ubuntu9.2.

There is no kernel 5.13 in the default repo/s.

There is an AskUb discussion on what you have to go thru' to install
kernel 5.13 in an Ub 20.04, which is what Mint 20.2 is.

How did you go about installing 5.13? What were you trying to
accomplish w/ the newer kernel (which actually normally requires Ub 21.04)?

the url done doesn't explain how to install libc6 2.33, but how to
downgrade to kernel 5.4...

My LM Cinnamon 20.2 kernel is 5.4.0-81-generic (LTS, April 2025) and
its repo libc6 is 2.31-0ubuntu9.3.
Also in the repos: kernel 5.11.0, supported until February 2022.

Do you have the latest version of VirtualBox - 6.1.26?
Is this a virtual machine or the host machine?

Did you compile your own kernel? Or did you get it pre-compiled?
I suspect you got a pre-compiled version, compiled against libc6 v2.33.
If so, this will not work. You can't just install a new libc6. Other
things may/will stop working.

I've just compiled kernel 5.13.12 against libc6 2.28 (see below) on
LMDE4 - see https://www.kernel.org/ for kernel source.

Get the kernel source you require and compile it.
Use your current configuration as the start for .config (zcat
"/proc/config.gz" > "linux-$yourversion/.config") and then run 'make
olddefconfig' to update it.
Then make, make modules_install, make install, update_initramfs and
update_grub in that order.

If this is a virtual machine, you must do
'/sbin/rcvboxadd quicksetup your-kernel-version' and 'update_grub' again.

Hope That Helps.

No, 6.1.22.

I tried : i uninstalled virtualbox 6.1.22, and tried this :

ef@ef-VivoBook-ASUSLaptop-X512FA-X512FA:~$ gdebi
Téléchargements/virtualbox-6.1_6.1.26-145957_Ubuntu_eoan_amd64.deb
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree
Reading state information... Done
Reading state information... Done
Ce paquet ne peut pas être installé
Dependency is not satisfiable: python (< 2.8)

But it failed

No, i just used Ubuntu mainline kernel installer.

I tried too to do this :

dpkg -i linux-headers-5.13.11-051311_5.13.11-051311.202108151332_all.deb
i had dowloaded.
