Oh c'mon, it just makes things less messy.

Sure if a thread gets too long/wide/deep/whatever, then why not create a
new one. But not everyone is interested into bits and bobs of ATI 8514
Ultra, so no need to have 50 different threads about it IMHO.

message title?

So... what is the difference between re-naming a message in a thread,
-OR- just making a massage with a different title?

Honestly, I thought the difference was obvious. Maybe your client
doesn't support threading properly? (Thunderbird may not be the best
newsreader but it supports threads relatively well, and even Google
Groups supports it)

If you post all related stuff to the same thread, the entire discussion
tree takes only one top-level slot/line (unless you expand it). So, if
somebody isn't interested in a particular topic, he/she/it can simply
ignore that line (and perhaps mark it as read) and move to the next one
to see what else is new. It can be rather annoying when you have to
munch through multiple top-level posts that are all touching on the same
general topic. Unrelated topics posted somewhere in the middle of the
"avalanche" can be easily missed.

Threading also makes sure that all related info stays grouped together,
even if the thread gets necro'd some 5 years later.

There are other reasons as well. The stuff I've mentioned is what I see
as most beneficial here.

Some may say it's an "unwritten rule"... I'd call it a good practice.
But I understand that everyone has somewhat different preferences/habits
when it comes to stuff like this.

I'd say monitor sensing once again (on the analog RGB lines, not the
monitor ID bits).

The TO-92 part (REG1) is most likely a reference for the DAC.

I assume it defaults to the Base Video monitor output. At least for the
VGA modes...

And it probably sets some register flag(s) as well.
