This is a fresh build of WASD 12.0 on AXP

Compile and link work with no errors (for simplicity I'm NOT building with SSL) but I'm getting the following when running the demo package...

%HTTPD-F-SOFTWAREID, HTTPd-WASD/12.0.0 OpenVMS/AXP
-HTTPD-F-WHEN, 25-JAN-2022 17:19:09.14
-HTTPD-F-WHERE, module:NET line:466
-HTTPD-F-WHAT, sanity check failure!
%HTTPD-I-PROXYVERIFY, for 32 records in local storage of 14 page(let)s
%HTTPD-F-EXIT, 25-JAN-2022 17:19:09, WASD:7080 %X100002A4
-HTTPD-F-TRACE, FFFFFFFF8008A0D8
-HTTPD-F-TRACE, 0000000000161AF4
-HTTPD-F-TRACE, 00000000001EA2B4
-HTTPD-F-TRACE, 000000000018D0BC
-HTTPD-F-TRACE, 000000000018BC2C
-HTTPD-F-ADIEU, ...

Trying to run the main HTTPD shows similar failures on the console when trying to connect to port 80.

Any thoughts? TIA.

Which emulator (or real Alpha hardware) are you using to run WASD ?

If it's not FreeAXP or real Alpha hardware, does your WASD kit work
with FreeAXP ?

What VMS version and TCP/IP version are you using ?

Simon.

Ok, I have no idea what was going on. Flattened the install, rebuilt and now everything is good (even with SSL) - so now just trying to get PHP running. Got all the components installed and just trying now to figure out what I need in the map and global files - anyone got any Dummies Guides for this??

Ok, the root cause of the issue seems to be in the host name resolution, specifically with regard to case sensitivity. Setting an alias with the specific case that WASD is expecting solves the problem.

Decidedly odd. But odder things have happened.

https://wasd.vsm.com.au/wasd_root/src/php/readmore.html

The readmore is a bit dated but these days relies on the Berryman PHP
kits being applied. I would update the readmore page but have failed to
rattle Mark's cage hard enough wrt any changes to PHPWASD.C.

https://wasd.vsm.com.au/wasd_root/src/php/readmore.html#Berryman

https://wasd.vsm.com.au/wasd_root/src/php/readmore.html#Configure_WASD

I'd suggest the RTE configuration. This allows the PHP application(s)
to reside outside the server directory structure. Apart from demos PHP
apps tend to be sprawling affairs. Borrowing from the readmore...

Edit the file WASD_CONFIG_MAP and at an appropriate point (the rules are
parsed from top to bottom) insert

exec /app/**.php* (cgi-bin:[000000]phpwasd.exe)/app_root/*.php* \
script=query=relaxed map=once ods=5
pass /app/* /app_root/*

(actually this is a fairly self-contained clause and and is pretty-much
position independent).

The 'pass /app/* /app_root/*' rule maps the app-expected path to the VMS
installation directory, which needs to be some form of concealed device
logical name to allow dependent paths to map naturally. So if the 'xyz'
app is expecting activation via the web path /xyz then it would be

pass /xyz/* /xyz_root/*

with (for example)

$ DEFINE /SYSTEM /EXEC /TRANS=CONCEALED XYZ_ROOT DKA100:[PHP.XYZ.]

The directory tree protections must allow the scripting account access.

Then check and load the mapping into the running server.

$ HTTPD/DO=MAP=CHECK
%HTTPD-S-CHECK, map config; 0 informationals, 0 warnings, 0 errors
WASD_ROOT:[local]WASD_CONFIG_MAP.CONF;55
$ HTTPD/DO=MAP
%HTTPD-I-DO, "MAP"; 1 instance notified; KLAATU::WASD:80

Reproduce this approach to support each independent application.

No changes to WASD_CONFIG_GLOBAL to get this running.

This configuration will not allow any of the (if installed) example
scripts to be activated. To access these

exec /cgi-bin/*.php* ($cgi-bin:[000000]phpwasd.exe)/cgi-bin/*.php* \
script=query=relaxed

Most of this detail is covered in the referenced links but the
admittedly various combinations of approaches and file systems and PHP
versions (not to mention my understanding) accumulated over the past two
decades make a ghastly hash (food) of configuration.

I might also take this opportunity to mention WATCH.

The WATCH facility is a powerful adjunct in server administration.
From the Server Administration facility (9. Server Administration)
it provides an online, real-time, in-browser-window view of request
processing in the running server. The ability to observe live request
processing on an ad hoc basis, without changing server configuration
or shutting-down/restarting the server process, makes this facility
a great configuration and problem resolution tool.

https://wasd.kicks-ass.net/wasd_root/wasdoc/features/features010.html
https://wasd.kicks-ass.net/wasd_root/wasdoc/features/features009.html
(to avoid wrapping - see section Access Before Configuration)

In addition to the default items ...
to observe mapping rule processing [x]Mapping
CGI processing (variables, I/O) [x]CGI
DCL (PHPWASD.EXE) script processing [x]DCL
though not necessarily all first-up, a welter of information can be
generated.

Hope this helps, Mark.

Hmmmm. So after the rebuild the local host database remained unchanged?
Should have exhibited the same behaviour.

Mark, thanks a million for the PHP pointers, that's tremendous - I'll give that a try today at some point.

In terms of the errors, here is my hosts database...

AXPBOX::tcpip sho hosts

LOCAL database

Host address Host name

127.0.0.1 LOCALHOST, localhost
192.168.0.47 axpbox.Home, axpbox.home

This ^^^ works. If the "axpbox.home" alias is *not* defined then we have the problem. Following this, I actually found an entry in the VSI TCP/IP manual which states that when hosts have a mixed-case then a uniform case alias should/must be defined. So it seems like a known situation.

WATCHER is excellent - what a superb diagnostic tool.

One question: after authorizing with, "HTTPD /DO=AUTH=SKELKEY=_username:password" this works; however obviously times out after a period at which point the page URL returns a 403. What is the recommended way to get WATCHER going again after this? Resubmitting the skeleton key doesn't seem to work - the only way I've found is to restart the web service. Any pointers would be appreciated - thanks.

Voila! Can reproduce that.

X86VMS$ tcpip show host /local

LOCAL database

Host address Host name

127.0.0.1 LOCALHOST, localhost

Nasty, and obscure.

It is. I sometimes think it sets WASD apart. [Of course, parent's
opinion of child.]

What is the recommended way to get WATCHER going again after this? Resubmitting the skeleton key doesn't seem to work - the only way I've found is to restart the web service. Any pointers would be appreciated - thanks.

Resetting the skeleton key

$ HTTPD /DO=AUTH=SKELKEY=0

and them re-establishing the key should work.

You can add a timeout period to the

$ HTTPD/DO=AUTH=SKELKEY=_username:password:<hours>

so

$ HTTPD//DO=AUTH=SKELKEY=_username:password:168

should set it for a (maximum) of seven days. Conversely

$ HTTPD//DO=AUTH=SKELKEY=0

resets (disables) the skeleton key.

https://wasd.vsm.com.au/wasd_root/wasdoc/features/features003.html#skeletonkeyauthentication

(wrap likely)

Skeleton key access is an ad hoc / emergency mechanism. It is far
better to make it a permanent feature of the configuration.
Unfortunately, usually involving VMS authentication, any WASD site will
tell you this is a (deliberately) non-trivial undertaking.

The mapping rules are scanned from first to last and the
"map-everything-else-as" rule '/*' is being hit at 39 before rules 40
and 41 can be encountered. At the very least move your two rules in
front of the '/*' rule. As mentioned, these two are pretty-much
position independent (once in front of the map-everything-else-as rule)
and if PHP is going to be your main game you can expedite their matching
(mapping is pretty efficient anyway) by moving them further towards the
front of the rule set.

So instead of spending the effort to fix the problem, they instead

I hope VSI are more proactive about fixing problems such as this and

Add another rule immediately before the existing two that defaults an
empty directory path to the desired script name.

Fantastic! Thanks, Mark. That's phpMyAdmin running better than it has ever done on CSWS. I'll continue to test tomorrow and report back.
Many thanks for the help, it's truly appreciated.

Confirmed via a little code (see below) and some local database fiddles.

WASD establishes the primary server host name using gethostname(). This
always is returned as lower case regardless of the host name database entry.

All upper or lower case host name works. Does not work with mixed-case.

So, Mark Berryman's 7.2.29 is working well, however 7.4.27 (both posted versions) gives the following response...
ERROR 502 - External agent did not respond (or not acceptably).

As there is nothing from the PHPWASD.EXE being included in the WATCH
report it suggests the executable is failing to activate. What does the
following command result in?

$ mcr cgi_exe:phpwasd.exe /version
PHPWASD IA64-1.4.7, 80400000, 30-OCT-2017 16:08:48.77
PHP 7.1.11, PHPSHR, 30-OCT-2017 13:59:30.40

There may be failure data recorded in the server process log. It can be
accessed via the Server Admin [Log+] report, or from your WATCH report
indicated log file

DKA0:[wasd_root.][log_server]AXPBOX_20220128235933.LOG;

All server process logs may be found via logical name WASD_SERVER_LOGS.

My server process log notes

%HTTPD-I-GZIP, using LIBZ_SHR32 V1.2.3

and the command

$ show log *libz*
8< snip 8<
(LNM$SYSTEM_TABLE)

"LIBZ" = "DISK$JFPLIB0020A:[LIBZ]"
"LIBZ_SHR32" = "LIBZ:LIBZSHR32_EV56.EXE"
"LIBZ_SHR64" = "LIBZ:LIBZSHR64_EV56.EXE"
8< snip 8<

The code uses a succession of logical names to identify and activate the
shareable image.

static $DESCRIPTOR (LibzImageDsc, "LIBZ_SHR32");
static $DESCRIPTOR (GnvLibzImageDsc, "GNV$LIBZSHR32");
static $DESCRIPTOR (WasdLibzImageDsc, "WASD_LIBZ_SHR32");
8< snip 8<
status = lib$find_image_symbol (dscptr = &WasdLibzImageDsc,
&ZlibVersionDsc,
&ZlibVersionFn, 0, 0);
if (status == RMS$_FNF)
status = lib$find_image_symbol (dscptr = &GnvLibzImageDsc,
&ZlibVersionDsc,
&ZlibVersionFn, 0, 0);
if (status == RMS$_FNF)
status = lib$find_image_symbol (dscptr = &LibzImageDsc,
&ZlibVersionDsc,
&ZlibVersionFn, 0, 0);
if (status == RMS$_FNF)
{
GzipFindImageStatus = status;
GzipZlibNamePtr = dscptr->dsc$a_pointer;
FaoToStdout ("%HTTPD-W-GZIP, shareable image not found\n");
return;
}

so if something obscure you could always

$ DEFINE /SYSTEM /EXEC WASD_LIBZ_SHR32 <location>

> Thoughts???

Fascinating as all this is to the general c.o.v. denizen it might be
time to consider taking it to a more specialised forum. The info-WASD
mailing list is a low-traffic, no off-topic, conclave for such like.
Mark Berryman is also a subscriber so you never know.

Just for the record, that should say "HPE instead documented the current
behaviour". I'm aware that VSI inherited the stack from HPE.
