what is gained if you press what is asked for
I get these calls on broadfband phone where they tell me that a specific
amount has been charged on ebay like $345.50 please press so and so if
true or press so and so if not. if you do the second example, what do
they gain and what happens next.

In one case, on the news, in an email, an "Amazon" charge was claimed, where
the scammers' goal (in that case) by giving you their contact information
(either a link or a phone number, I don't recall at the moment) was to
obtain your login/password to your Amazon account as you tried to resolve
the issue.

Once they had your login/password credentials, they bought gift cards, as I
recall (from the news).

Each scammer is out for your money, of that you can be sure, and the reason
they exist is that it's incredible how many morons are out there.

They may use that as confirmation of your phone
number being valid, allowing them to update and
improve their scam lists. It's possible that they could
do more. I don't know. But I remember years ago there
were scams where you'd get a call and they'd switch
you over to a 900 number. So I've always wondered
whether pressing a button in a scam call might empower
them to do something similar.

In any case, if this is not your credit card company
confirming a purchase, don't answer. If you don't
have an answering machine and have answered, then
hang up.

If you have time and the inclination, you can take them on a wild
goose chase of false information (hint: they know zero about you except
that you answered the random phone number they called). Don't give them
a single true fact about yourself.
