When I first installed and started using Linux mint, kernel upgrades
requiring a restart seemed fairly rare. Now they seem to be more
frequent. Any others noting this?

I've noticed more than the average. I just write it off to someone is paying a bit more attention to some fixes and thus they are pushing
more and more updates. It's over my head but I'm sure there are documented reasons but change log on the updates today didn't seem to
have any change log.

I've noticed that also. I think it may have started with 20.x (not sure).
This particular computer is running 19.1 and, as far as I can remember, it's
never required a reboot after an upgrade.

Well, the latest update didn't fix the sudden opening and closing of the
cd tray during boot, so I hope it's fixed in this new release. For me
it's not a reason to switch back to an older kernel, but it's pretty
annoying nonetheless.

You really only need to reboot when you want to use a new kernel. You
don't have to reboot, just because your system has installed a new kernel,
you could put off the reboot till some time in the future.

Of course, it is *advisable* to use an upgraded kernel, but it is not
*mandatory*.

I reboot when it suits me. Sometimes that's often, sometimes it's not.
Don't get too uptight about it, either way.
