Hi All!

Looking for any information and technical articles related to replication of databases.
Any pointers?
May be in DEC Tech Journals ?

Thanks in advance!

If the "any information and technical articles related to replication
of databases" is intended to be as general as is written, and is not
specific to Rdb, check rqlite.

"rqlite is an easy-to-use, lightweight, distributed relational
database, which uses SQLite as its storage engine. rqlite is simple to
deploy, operating it is very straightforward, and its clustering
capabilities provide you with fault-tolerance and high-availability."

https://github.com/rqlite/rqlite

Haven't looked to see if rqlite is portable to OpenVMS, but there is an
SQLite port for OpenVMS. (And which really should be integrated into
V9.x, but that's another topic.)

rqlite seems to be written in go, which is not available for VMS
currently.

Neither are native versions of most other languages. Oh, wait, you
weren't referring to OpenVMS x86-64. 😜

No technical articles know of but if you're looking for a solution to a
real problem rather than a god read can I ask why you're replicating.

To quote an old Rdb Engineer "The best way to replicate is not at all"

But to answer your question (Jan Eric would be more up to date than me)
you could search for: -

1) VAX/DEC Data Distributor

This had full scheduled Table replication, Extraction and Extraction
Rollup (multiple source Tables) functionality

2) Use your own triggers to journal changes to the source Table.

Had a friend who did this to create an "adapter" For Tibco rendezvous ESB.

But Again why replicate?

With Rdb, sadly, DB Integrator is no longer supported but both Oracle
and SQL Server let you join across databases. You don't have to worry
about how old your copy of the data is as there is a single source of
truth. No telling users "Yeah wait 5mins till LDAP is dristributed 'cos
we don't know which server your logon will go to" :-(

Thanks to all for the references, will study. I looking for theoretical materials, but open source project also is good.

Primary interest is replication a DB from root/master node (-s) in a P2P network over a swarms of peers.
It's may be SQLITE or MDBX or something other or good old RMS, no matter.

An area or application is the blockchain.

Hadoop, ZooKeeper, HBase, Hive, Kafka and some other related Apache
projects might be of interest, then.

And my usual pointers to Paxos, etc.

https://www.the-paper-trail.org/post/2009-02-03-consensus-protocols-paxos/
https://www.the-paper-trail.org/post/2014-08-09-distributed-systems-theory-for-the-distributed-systems-engineer/

https://fpaxos.github.io

There's DECdtm on OpenVMS too, not that that is very widely used.

> An area or application is the blockchain.

Applications needing and using blockchains—distributed append-only
ledgers—are fairly rare.

Outside of usage such as scams, ransomware payments, and illegal
financial transfers, of course. Flaws found in smart contracts have
been immensely profitable for some, too.

Blockchain performance also tends to be an issue, as compared with the
available performance of non-distributed-ledger-based database schemes.

Blockchains are among the worst-performing databases available too, and
those using proof-of-work schemes are problematic for other reasons.
