How many generations can there be of the same thing?

Some years ago, maybe 10, I bought three DL380's for my wife's lab,
for $100 each. I don't remember knowing about the generation, but
they were fast enough for what needed to be done.

Fun machines, with ILO so you can remotely turn them on and off.

That was about the same time I bought an RX2600, used for $100,
and they look very similar, I believe using the same disks and
disk carriers.

Ancient history in computer years.

As many as Compaq ~> HP ~> HPE ~> ??? wants to make.

The basic design and capability (as in number of CPU / drive / slots)
has stayed roughly the same. The different generations are updates of
the basic design using newer components.

I think I've seen some vendors make the generation number match the CPU
generation number. I don't know if HP(E) does this. E.g.
SuperWizBang3000 G1 used 1st generation Intel Core CPUs while the
SuperWizBang3000 G5 used 5th generation Intel Core CPUs.

If they were Compaq branded, they might have been 1st generation DL380s.
I don't think the generation marking existed on the 1st generation.

I've owned multiple DL380s over the years. I've got four DL380 G5s in
my basement at the moment along with two ML370 G5s.

Yep.

IP KVM is nice too.

I'm not surprised.

Yep.

But they probably still run.

They are actually completely different machines, at least the Gen 7 is
completely different from the Gen 8.

The Gen 9 does not permit use of non-HP-branded disk drives. Is this still
the case for the Gen 10? It was not the case for the Gen 8.

All those Dl380 Gen10s we had - we just sold to another dealer (I guess
pricing was very good)

Will get some more from the same place in a few months if interested

I think, DL 380 moniker means a little more than just a number of
CPU sockets (2) and disk drive bays.
It also means:
- Intel-branded CPU - unlike AMD-branded DL 385
- 2U - unlike 1U DL 360
-Enterprise-class RAS - unlike cheaper DL 180.
