If you'd like Zip and UnZip for your x86_64 system which say things
like:

Compiled with DEC C V7.4-547 for OpenVMS (V8.4-2L3 x86_64) on Jun 27 2022.

instead of:

Compiled with DEC C V7.4-407 for OpenVMS (V8.4-2L1 VAX) on May 27 2021.

(and get a couple of VMS-related bug fixes as well), then you might want
to investigate these (unofficial, not-well-tested) kits:

Source only:

http://antinode.info/ftp/info-zip/unzip60s4/unzip60s4_src.zip
http://antinode.info/ftp/info-zip/zip30s3/zip30s3_src.zip

Source plus objects and executables (without bzip2 support):

http://antinode.info/ftp/info-zip/unzip60s4/unzip60s4_vms.zip
http://antinode.info/ftp/info-zip/zip30_s3/zip30_s3_vms.zip

Complaints are always welcome.

Thanks Steven for maintaining these packages.

I'm a little confused about the version. I have compiled version of
zip3.1d-Beta and unzip6.1beta on my machines now for over 2.5 years. No
problems seen up to now. The above packages are improvements of the
stable versions. So the question raises:
-what is the status of the beta versions?
-will the same enhances included in the beta versions in the near future
-is there any expected release date for ether 3.1 or 6.1?

I can believe that. Many of the UnZip bugs involved buffer overflows
or NULL-pointer dereferences, which would be triggered only by malicious
data. The problems which affected valid data involved relatively
unlikely cases, like an archive size bigger than 1TB, or a one-character
line ending (like LF) which fell at the end of an internal buffer.

So a typical user could do many things without seeing them.

> -what is the status of the beta versions?

Still slowly simmering. Neither I or the Zip guy have had much time
for these projects lately. No release dates have been set.

> -will the same enhances included in the beta versions in the near
> future

The fixes in these kits are backports of changes already included in
the development code (including x86_64 support in the builders). But,
because even beta releases with these fixes may not happen for a while,
and VSI seems to be distributing (unimproved versions of) these programs
now, I thought it best to get out some updates to the current (but old)
released versions.

With any luck, VSI will take the hint. But even if they don't, the
stuff is still available to anyone.

Thanks for the explanation.

I compiled the new unzip without problems.

When compiling zip, the executables are created, but the make-procedure
ends with:

%MMS-F-GWKNOPRN, There are no known sources for the current target
[.VMS]VMS_ZIP.RNH

Is this file missing in the distribution? (I downloaded the src-only zip
file)

Yes. Oops. It was in the full (zip30s3_vms.zip) kit, but not the
source-only (zip30s3_src.zip) kit. I've fixed the kit-making script,
and replaced the incomplete source-only kit on my server with a complete
one.

Thanks for the report.

My UnZip kit-making script didn't have the same error. (Sigh.)
