Hi,

I have a gmail email account and a Samsung Galaxy A11 Tracfone.

I made NO changes to settings relating to Notifications. Before, when
I got an email (gmail), my Tracfone would make a notification sound.

I love that feature because I use it as a package was delivered
notification.

Yesterday (11-22-21) I received a package from Amazon, but my
Tracfone did NOT make a sound. Note: It did make a notification
sound for a text message promotion from Tracfone.

Checking my email, there WAS a email notification.

Also, I sent an email to my gmail address via another email
account on a computer as a test. No notification sound!!

Any ideas?

Have you got any "clever" options such as flip-to-shhh enabled? that would mean
it was silent whenever it's face down ...

I'd like to be helpful but the most I can suggest to the OP is that I'd
check all the basic (easy stuff) type settings first.

What are those "easy stuff" basic settings?
I don't know.

I do not even understand how my own notifications work (Android 11), so I
empathize with the OP, where there seems to be scattered about all sorts of
disjoint settings which "may" affect an incoming email notification sound.

For example, maybe the OP can check these settings which I have on mine...

Notifications === Allowed
Show Notifications === on
Miscellaneous === on
Attachments === on
Messages === on
App icon badges === on

Notification reminders > on
(Remind every 3 minutes about notifications for selected apps.)
Select apps to get reminders for > YOUR_EMAIL_MUA === on

Android 11:Settings > Sounds and vibration > Notification sound
(make sure that it's set to a sound that you can hear but this isn't likely
the OP's problem as other notifications come in so it's likely app related
somehow)

Hi Andy,

I will check those settings you indicated.

BTW: The phone was in the same location (turned on) as before when I
heard email(s) notification sounds.

There were NO updates since and I made NO changes in the settings.

Settings the same as before when I heard the Gmail notification sound.

Settings> Apps> Gmail: Notifications "Allowed"
..Permissions, "No permissions allowed" . The list of Permissions not allowed
include Camera, Contacts, Microphone, Phone, Storage, but NOT Email (NOT in
list). Note: This Tracfone also uses WiFi for internet.

FINAL UPDATE:

I decided to try what you have set in your phone regarding the "Remind
every 3...". I turned it ON. I selected GMail in the Apps list.

By golly, it WORKS!!

Isn't that peculiar? You have to "Remind" the Notification!!

I'm happy for you and for anyone reading this that you've found a solution.

Thank you for closing the loop as all too often people get the kind
volunteer help from those like Andy Burns and me and they don't even test
out the suggestions (as happened with Carlos most recently, for example).

I agree with you that notifications don't seem to make sense to me,
especially under what you've observed, which is apparently that you don't
get the initial notification unless to "remind" it to re-notify you.

What doesn't make sense to me is there's no setting I can find in Android 11
to get just a single reminder. In my Android 11 settings,

Android 11:Settings > Notifications > Advanced settings >
Notification reminders > on
Select apps to get reminders for > (YOUR-APP) === on
Remind every (3 minutes, 5 minues, 10 minutes, 15 minutes)

Note: I see no option to set just a _single_ reminder in (3,5,10,15
minutes); you have to have reminders, forever, in those time frames (of
course they stop when you respond to the reminder in some fashion).

In summary, both of us see different sides of this inconsistency:
a. You've seen that without "reminders" you get zero notification sounds
b. I've seen no way to set just one reminder - it has to be incessant
(at least it's incessant until you do something manually to stop it)

While I agree that we've both observed those two things, neither of them
makes any sense to me in terms of logic of how a notification tone "should"
work.

Alas, yet more evidence Android isn't even close to perfect, yet. :)
